Re: The Edwardians have arrived!

I wonder what our Aussies friends have to tell abt this biggrin

Australia is about to experience its own "dinorush", beginning with today's unveiling of a previously undiscovered 25m-long dinosaur that roamed central-western Queensland about 100 million years ago.

Now on display at the Queensland Museum, the largest dinosaur bones found in Australia came from the remains of two giants uncovered in the Winton Formation, west of Charleville, in 2005 and 2006.

Nicknamed Cooper and George, the dinosaurs belong to the Titanosaur family.

"We don't have a scientific name for this type of Titanosaur because we believe they are a new type of species," Queensland Museum curator of geosciences, Scott Hocknull, said.

"These are the largest bones ever discovered in Australia. They would have been about two buses in length."

The largest of the bones measures 1.5 metres long and weighs 100kg.

The Winton Formation is a fossil-rich area which runs along the interior of Queensland - and paleontologists believe it could be the site of a Australia's own dinorush.

"150 years ago, the United States experienced a dinorush where lots of bones were unearthed in a short space of time. Australia is now at the forefront of it's own dinorush," Mr Hocknull said.

Both sets of remains were found on the property of Stuart and Robyn MacKenzie, 320km west of Charleville - George in 2005 and Cooper in 2006.

"We were mustering cattle on motorbikes when we found fragments of the big one, Cooper. My 14-year-old son found the other one out the back," Mr MacKenzie said

"I've been trying to find dinosaur bones for years, I just think it's a really cool thing to do."

It took four months for a crew from the Queensland Museum to excavate and clean Cooper's bones to get them ready for display.

A display of the bones will be open to the public this afternoon in the Museum Zoo section of the Queensland Museum on level two.
