Resume experience?

So I was just putting together my resume(about to graduate college) and I was wondering if I should put on it somewhere(volunteer experience, activities, or something?) that I am a contributor? Thanks!

You can, but what section of the CV? experience, interests, hobbies. Someone volunteered in hopes it would be in lieu of a public service penalty and others using is as a tax write off under the section donations.

Only proof likely to come available in the future is a 'certificate of contribution' stating 'work units' or 'CPU hours' (imagine someone with a 16 core box running for 1 year). Some projects allow for them to self-generate.... seen it at ABC and F@H.

Re: Resume experience?

Set up different kinds of resumes for different kinds of companies. Some care a lot about volunteerisms, some don't, and some want their applications on their own form instead of a resume.

Don't try to cover the world with a 5 page resume. Anything longer than 1.5 pages will be ignored.

Setting a summary of job experience with appropriate buzzwords at the top these days is very helpful. Computers do the screening these days, but can also have problems.

An applicant mentioned "restaurant" experience. Well, we have a "cafeteria", so there's no match. << TOSS >>

Somebody who worked at Orkin pest control entered his occupation on a U.S. tax form as "hired killer".

Re: Resume experience?

I would.

The trip about being here as seen on any resume is that you show the ability to to think outside the box. To crunch here is not a self oriented actions. It shows that your life isnt all about you and there is space for others.

If you are worried that is woruld be taken negitively, realize that any employer that would go that way is showing you why you may not want to work there.

Re: Resume experience?

For some kinds of companies it is.

For companies with a very formal application process, any deviation from what they expect is seen as a "bad thing".

Customization or specific reactions to the interview can be placed in a cover letter.

I agree. The place you are putting this is going to be in the volunteer section anyway. Who knows maybe you would get the chance to explain all about WCG and then the employer might be moved to hook up and crunch!

Just go for it. The volunteer section is all about volunteering and giving back to the community.

I know people who put down 'blood donor' cause they give blood regularly. They are not lying. They do give blood regularly.

So, why not put WCG down? It is crunching for a cure, not a video game or anything similarly worthless. But now, you have a video game console that can crunch...think they would say no to someone putting that crunching down as volunteerism? Why shouldn't we put our crunching at WCG down on paper? If I ever get the chance to do it I am going to without a second thought!

Don't need a paper certificate, we have our My Grid and/or Team member page. It's just like citing off the internet and using a web address for work cited.

Be brave and stand up for what you believe in. It's worth it.

Re: Resume experience?

Speaking of this, is it possible to get a certification of how much you have contributed to WCG volunteering programs?

Cheers :)

Re: Resume experience?

It's on the 2007 planner. Not specified what it includes or how provided, but probably like other sites taking an option & print-it-yourself, as many as you like.

Re: Resume experience?

Should perhaps clarify: this is a nifty certificate for hanging on your wall. It has no meaning for legal/tax purposes.

WCG isn't a charity, so you can't write off donations of CPU time (even if it were possible to put a monetary value on the donation).
