Internet Relay Chat channel #wcg at freenode.net

For those of you who are chatty and like a real-time setting for your verbal gymnastics, I've created an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel #wcg at irc.freenode.net.

If you already have an IRC client installed, you can copy & paste this link irc://irc.freenode.net/wcg in your browser or otherwise direct your IRC client to the channel mentioned above.

Firefox users can install the ChatZilla addon. Also available is the popular cross-platform (Windows, Linux, etc) IRC client XChat.

Your forum profile allows to enter 4 different chat services. The Chat service icons become visible in the signature of a member's posts, but only function if the member is logged in. The 4 are Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and MSN.

Thanks, but I prefer topical IRC chat channels over maintaining multiple PM conversations. Plus, private messages are supported in IRC, so you get the best of both worlds:)

I've written a bot that hangs out at the IRC channel that fetches WCG stats by username. The name of the bot is 'wcg' ;)

Example usage:


RatOmeter> -wcg ratometer
     <wcg> Cruncher: ratometer, Joined: 04/27/2007, Latest results returned: 05/02/2007 12:29:29 [3+ hour(s) ago]
     <wcg> CPU time (y:d:h:m:s): 0:030:05:16:10 (#135,326), Results: 81 (#126,248), Points: 21,473 (#132,759)

I'm brand new to WCG, but am a long time user of IRC. Though RatOmeter has been absent from IRC since his post, I intend to stay there for a bit in hopes others may gather. I'd also like to add that I'll be on #WorldCommunityGrid on Efnet as well, in case there are old-time Efnet junkies out there who refuse to utilize multiple servers. :)

We're trying irc://irc.mWare.ca/#WCG since the freenode and Efnet channels have been kind of slow.

Head on over to the home of UserFriendly on IRC, and we'll see if this IRC thing takes off a little.
