It actually stands for "Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing "
It is a client to run any of several projects.
Because of it's versatility, it can be used for more than one project and is available for operating systems other than Windows.

Re: What is BOINC please?

Hi pikkumoo,
If you look at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadBoinc.do?newMember=false you will see that you can download United Devices for Windows ® if you accept the default but you can also download 3 other choices. All 3 are actually BOINC, just for different platforms.

The UD client is the easiest to install, but using BOINC (which can also be done from the main BOINC site at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php) lets you run projects from other organizations - - http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php

We urge people who enjoy using their computer to experiment with BOINC. The installation is only slightly more complicated than that for UD, if you use the installation package fromm the WCG, but it gives you many more options to explore.

It is easy to move from UD to BOINC: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm
