April 11, 1955 - The Air India Kashmir Princess is bombed and crashes in a failed assassination attempt on Zhou Enlai by the Kuomintang. An emergency appendectomy delayed his travel and hence didn't board. 16 of those on board were killed; three survived.

April 12, 1606 - The Union Flag is adopted as the flag of Great Britain. It is de facto national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland also known as the Union Jack. Historically, the flag has been used throughout the former British Empire.

April 13 1990

The Soviet government officially accepts blame for the Katyn Massacre of World War II,
when nearly 5,000 Polish military officers were murdered and buried in mass graves in the Katyn Forest.
The admission was part of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's promise to be more forthcoming and candid concerning Soviet history.

At Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.,
John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally wounds President Abraham Lincoln.
The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army at Appomattox,
effectively ending the American Civil War.

On April 14:

A hail storm occurred in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, causing $1.5 billion in damage. 20,000 properties and 40,000 vehicles were damaged during the storm with more than 25 aircraft damaged at Sydney Airport, one person was killed while fishing after getting struck by lightning and several other people were injured. It was the costliest hailstorm to hit an Australian populated city. Largest stone measured was 9.5cm.
