Imagine inviting yourself to dinner with 30 different families -- in 24 countries. Imagine shopping, farming, cooking and eating with those families, taking note of every vegetable peeled, every beverage poured, every package opened. That's exactly what photographer Peter Menzel and writer Faith D'Aluisio did for their new book, Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. The husband-and-wife team wanted to see how globalization, migration and rising affluence are affecting the diets of communities around the globe

Defunct spy satellite may hit Earth first week of March 02/08/2008

WASHINGTON - A dead US spy satellite in a deteriorating orbit is expected to hit the Earth during the first week of March, officials said Thursday.

Where the satellite will hit is not known. Officials familiar with the situation say about half of the 5,000-pound (2,270 kilograms) spacecraft is expected to survive its blazing descent through the atmosphere and will scatter debris, some potentially hazardous, over several hundred miles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter............

Court: Nebraska Electric Chair Not Legal

A year ago, Carey Dean Moore wrote a short letter to the Nebraska Supreme Court from his cell on death row. "Appellant wishes to be executed," it said.

On Friday, the court said electrocution is unconstitutional, a stunning response to Dean, nine others on death row and those who question whether the electric chair constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

"Condemned prisoners must not be tortured to death, regardless of their crimes," Judge William Connolly wrote in the 6-1 opinion for the court.

Eclipses in the distant past often terrified viewers who took them as evil omens. Certain lunar eclipses had an overwhelming effect on historic events. One of the most famous examples is the trick pulled by Christopher Columbus.

Shipwrecked

On Oct. 12, 1492, as every schoolchild has been taught, Columbus came ashore on an island northeast of Cuba. He later named it San Salvador (Holy Savior). Over the next ten years Columbus would make three more voyages to the "New World," which only bolstered his belief that he reached the Far East by sailing West...
