There are manuals that editors use to standardize writing styles. The Chicago Style Manual is currently in vogue and I hate what it did to the grand irregular verbs of the English language.

Thus, those of us who learned English before a certain age might say "I dove" and have the editors change our writing to "I dived." Thus the past tense of "dive" has been standardized to sound ugly to educated ears.

ohhhh, NOOOOOO?! I wondered where all the second 'L's went! Did Chicago do that, as well? PLEEEEASE tell me "I awakened" and "She sneaked" are still acceptable.
