Re: CUDA Boinc Client

Please visit discussion at BOINCdevelopers forum where I just learned what you are talking about.... if that is not telling how many know about this: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1609

WCG does not make or write any projects, it gets them from other research scientists from around the world who need distributed computing power. If one of these scientists know about this GPU fad and writes the science to run on one of these GPU's, the day might come that WCG will host a project for these. BUT, now there is competition from Xbox, ATI, NVIDIA, PS3, so probably No, not any time soon can we expect it to happen.

Re: CUDA Boinc Client

One year later ......
Do you know if there is any project which will use the CUBA technologie ?
Nvidia release the SDK few time ago, so may be developer could use it to build a new project with this technologie ?

Thanks

Re: CUDA Boinc Client

Hi Wilgard,
I have not heard of any projects being considered with unusual platforms. Some upcoming projects use Fortran and we have to go looking for people qualified to help us support Fortran. biggrin When I started out long ago, I was surprised at the paucity of support for Fortran. Even then, people were trying to get away from it. But it sticks because it is so easy for scientists to learn while concentrating on their research rather than on computer science. This is not a digression. I suspect that most projects will be programmed on old stodgy platforms rather than on the cutting edge. The researchers are not interested in computer science and it will show in their projects.

Re: CUDA Boinc Client

Ho, it is so disappointing .....
There is also the new SDK provided by AMD the OpenCL (Open Computer Language). CUDA and OpenCL, are based on the C language and use the GPU power for computing datas.

Re: CUDA Boinc Client

Wilgard, for features like this to take off, we need a science project that wants to exploit it.

Unfortunately, that's not the way most computational biology seems to work. FORTRAN seems to be the language of choice, and most software has a long history and established codebase. Porting to an entirely new platform is a massive undertaking.

So, we either need a brand new program with developers willing to try targeting a new platform (and for most scientists, trying something like distributed computing is a big leap just by itself), or we need an established program that has the resources to expand to new platforms.

None of the BOINC projects do, but Folding@Home is currently in an open BETA test of Folding on CUDA-enabled Nvidia GPUs. See the GPU2 FAQ and their forum for more details.

Or can we install the Folding@home gpu client and by any solution totalize points for the GRID team?
