(Actually, the nursery rhyme (which originated in 1665, during the bubonic plague) has nothing to do with ashes. The ring of roses refers to the ring of red, swollen, bubos around the root of the affected limb, and "ashoo" or "a-tissue" refers to the sneezing caused by the pneumonic plague which followed and was the most usual cause of "all fall down" i.e. death. The plague was thought to be caused by a bad smell, hence the pocket full of posies)
