Sometimes after 'automatic updates', the computer will later do a 'required re-start' by itself. But it will not go past the log-in window even though I am the only user.
I assume the machine is not crunching during this time until I see this and log in? |

Depends. If you installed BOINC as a service, then it will be busy crunching at the login screen. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

It is boinc but I am just one of the many 'download and forget about it' people, so I don't think I have a 'service', whatever that is

If you really want to know, scroll to the top of your messages. If you are running as a service, there will be a line:
Executing as a daemon BOINC 6 will always be installed as a service. |

Hi halfcard,
If you download the BOINC installation program from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php one of the first questions it asks is whether or not to install BOINC as a service. The BOINC installation program on the WCG website has been simplified and does not give you that option. Lawrence |

I assume the machine is not crunching during this time until I see this and log in? Another way to work around this, assuming you do not have your system password protected, is to change the user accounts in the control panel of Win XP. I had the same problems as you with the rebooting and sitting at the welcome screen until I found a way around. Some of my machines are password protected so that will have to be the case with those, but if you don't have passwords, try this: Open the User Accounts menu in the control panel If you have .Net installed on your machine, there is probably a user called ASP.NET that gets created when .Net is installed. Since I have no need for this account (You can google to find out what it is for) I delete it. In the "Change the way users log on and off" portion, I disable the "Fast User Switching". Of course like I said, if you have login passwords enabled, this will not help. If that is the case, I'm not sure if you can change the configuration of BOINC to run as a service or if you have to uninstall and reinstall as a service. When you install BOINC, it will give you a few options, as a service is one of them. Choose that. That would be the better way to go, since as a service it crunches even if nobody is logged in. |

No password is not save certainly if you live with MS being allowed to auto-boot your PC, which you can disable too i.e. make it your choice when to boot and the ruddy 30 minute reminder can be diabled too with the yellow shield just staying in the systray to remind you. Does not matter if Tuesday patching is applied thru a boot, today or tomorrow (my opinion).
----------------------------------------There are 2 rather nifty routines I've mentioned before on these fora: Sysinternals (now MS): AutoLogon (password is stored in encrypted format) Immediate Auto log out: %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation to be entered in shortcut and placed in the Autostart folder. It's equal to performing Windows-Key+L. The auto-logout is immediate, while meantime in logged out state all Autostart programs load. Go for coffee, come back and your machine is ready to go and safe from opportunists. Keep the fast-switch on, so you can change to a higher level Admin account if need be without interrupting the crunching (more of my opinion). Someone mentioned a few days ago that he never did backup and loosing the disk content leaving him without baggage was okay. Don't let your disk open to any passer by or your disk could become heavy baggage! You're at the helm, stay at the helm. cheers

Sysinternals (now MS): AutoLogon (password is stored in encrypted format) Good call, I forgot about good old Sysinternals. They have some nice little add-ons there. |
