Lets talk about beer

As the Oxymoron thread is moving more and more to talking about beer, I thought that it would be a good idea to start a new thread.

Lets start off with a discussion of what your favourite beer is.

As for myself, I enjoy Hoegaarden, a beer in the witbier style. I tasted it a number of years ago before Interbrew got their claws into the name and I must admit that there is not that much difference.

I love going into a Belguim bar and ordering a large Hoegaarden and getting a litre (just over two pints in the UK and about 2 1/2 pints in the US).

I also enjoy a bottle or draught of a beer called Topvar. This is a Slovak beer in the Pils type which is in Slovak hands and not in the hands of Heineken/InterBrew/Anheauser Busch etc.

Re: Lets talk about beer

Hi Stares,
My favourite is Belgian also at this end. It's called Leffe Brun. I discovered this the same evening in Brussels as the Hoegaarden. As I remember a very pleasant evening.

Back in the UK it's now available in Tesco's smile in a bottle with a Champagne cork.

The Belgians know how to make great Beer

Dave

Re: Lets talk about beer

The certainly do.

Did you ever try De Verboden Frucht (The Forbidden Fruit) ? It is also made by Hoegaarden breweries. Too many of those and you tend to fall down.

Regarding Leffe, the local Wetherspoons has Leffe Blond and Hoegaarden available on tap, which is very nice.

cool Re: Lets talk about beer

At last someone wants to discuss a serious, IMPORTANT topic. Beer drinkers do not come in as many varieties as wine bibbers, but there are still many differences. One of my brothers-in-law always keeps a keg in his house near a refrigerator with frozen mugs because he thinks that beer without a head (lots of foam) is just near-beer (fake beer).

Although I do not want to start any fights, I will say that I have two very different preferences in beer. First, for simple drinking in a bar with friends or at a party, I like a glass of lightly flavored, lightly colored water with some alcohol and no foam to get in the way. Here in the USA, I am well served since almost all American beer fits this description. My particular preferences are Michelob Light, Coors Light, Strohs Light. . . . . . Well, no need to continue, though I also respond well to free beer. Secondly, for drinking with a meal I want a beer that is practically the opposite. I want a beer with tremendous flavor. I am less impatient in this case, so foam is not much of an impediment though I am still not in favor of it. Unfortunately, I have never come across a locally available brand that really fits my desire. Heineken Dark is the brand available in most local restaurants that comes closest to what I want, but it still misses by miles -- ummm. .. I guess I should say by kilometers in this international setting.

I suppose that having started by stating my opinion about foam, I should finish with completely alienating everybody by saying that I do not consider beer to be a thirst-quencher. If I am thirsty, for some reason beer is not very satisfactory. Most people I know are the complete opposite. I have no idea why I prefer water in this case. In any event, now that I have diabetes I just drink small glasses of beer to be sociable so this is just reminiscing for me now.

Re: Lets talk about beer

Friends,.....!!!!!!

I fully agree with Lawrence.... A realy IMPORTANT subject here ... and what a great surprise..... You island guys know and fancy the good brands !!!! wink Stuart... David.. My surprise is that you picked both belgium brands and our "new continent" friend Lawrence pickes a brand in the neigbour country Holland.. All beer from the BeNeLux!!!
I am a beer drinker myself, besides the everyday thirstkiller (Heineken), my favourite beer varies during the season/mood/time of day and/or what I am doing or have to do. During the autum/winter I like the sweet/dark "verboden vrucht/Leffe bruin-style" the most, these are available as Bock-beer in every supermarket here in Holland. During the spring and summer I like the more bitter/sweet styles like Leffe blond and Hoegaarden Wit....
But a true all season beer for me .... difficult .... but Duvel would certainly be a good choice I'll think blushing

These smoking Cpu's makes me thirsty guys... biggrin

biggrin Re: Lets talk about beer

Myself I lean toward the dark beers. Literally and figuratively. biggrin Though I must readily admit I have never acquired a taste for a beer with too much Hops. Lord knows I've tried but I hate the bite at end of a swallow. I never could acquire a taste for Guiness another one I've tried to acquire a taste for because everyone else tells me I'm missing something - I must but can't for the life of me taste it.
For commericalized beers I like Spatten, Fosters, Sam Adams, Michelob dark, Mondelo dark or light, and Chimay when I'm feeling expansive. There was a beer I took a likeing to in Germany when I lived in Karlsruth, Moneger I think it was called but that has been more than two decades ago but it had a smooth taste I still remember.
I've never gotten into the low Carb beers why bother might as well drink water.
I like my beer at a cool room temp. not so cold that it freezes my taste buds - if I'm that desperate I might as well drink cold antifreeze.
There is almost nothing better than having a good beer and lively discussions among friends. I've noticed as I grow older my blader gets smaller and smaller - I'm fast reaching the point that just popping the top makes me go to the loo biggrin Ah! for the good old days when I could drink for half a day before nature took her toll.

Re: Lets talk about beer

The other night I had in one sitting as many beers as I have had in that last four months combined. That would kill most men, but I am tough and can handle it. I enjoyed both of them wink

I like darker beers, something stout.

Our american beers are like having sex in a canoe.
(probably not allowed to post the punch line to that joke)

It does help that I have travelled extensively both with work and pleasure. smile

The thing is that Heineken and Interbrew are worldwide brands and they have the marketing power to get the message across.

However, there is nothing better than sitting out beside the town hall in Leuven (for example) and having yourself a beer at 1am in the morning.
