My machines are all personal but I don't use BOINC screen savers anyway. The problems I have with the Dengue project graphics are two fold:
The political comments by the schoolchildren are totally irrelevant. We are talking about finding a cure for yellow fever or hepatitis. All that text is irrelevant, and takes up space which might be given over to an incomprehensible graphic representation of what is going on in the model. In addition; The quality of the graphics is very poor. None of the WCG graphics are very impressive by comparison with climateprediction.net, but that does not matter. The other sets look professional and clean. Dengue graphics are just messy. It would be better to remove them completely until somebody has time to come up with something of a higher quality both in design and implementation. Robert |

World Community Grid is more than just one project. In fact, it's even more than the sum of the currently active projects. Benefiting humanity is a noble, if vague, goal. The students were asked for their thoughts on "making the world a better place". This it entirely appropriate and in line with WCG's mission.
I do not see that this is political. Hate crime legislation is political. Saying hatred is bad should be something that we can all agree on, without shame or equivocation. Besides, this is the World Community Grid. Local politics are irrelevant - although, if something you see in the screensaver graphics makes you think about how these ideals affect and are affected by your local laws, cultural bias and politics - then the screensaver is doing some good. Sadly, I have to agree about the quality of the graphics. This is the first resizable layout that WCG have done, and it hasn't yet reached the polish we expect in a screensaver. In particular, there have been some technical difficulties with font rendering. Antialiasing would be an improvement, too. |

(Jean) And by the way, all these English texts don't mean much to the majority of WCG members (look at the map in the Global Statistics). (retsof) Have you got any anonymous texts? They are taking over, since there are more anonymous members than members in ALL OTHER COUNTRIES COMBINED. Since you have rightfully asked the question next to mine I am sure you have already guessed which conclusion I had in mind: no text based screensavers for this really international grid network. Which is valid for my suggested minimalist text too. ![]() Cheers. Jean. PS: From a post following ours I begin to think that there is a real urgency to solve this screensaver argument before we get the NRA to decide that it is time for them to become the GRA (G for Global). ![]() |

I run all my windows boxes as a service so I had to re-install one to see what the hubbub was all about. Nothing. Just like I thought. As was mentioned, nothing distasteful. Maybe the scrolling comments by the 8th graders wearing the rose colored glasses could get annoying but other than that. (shaking my head) Most companies have policy regarding loading unauthorized screen savers just because of instances like this. Load boinc in service mode and forget about the screen savers. Set your monitor to shut off after 5-10 minutes instead. The easiest way to end hate is to have everyone be open-minded and accept people for who they are, no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation. - Mitch S., age 14, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX “You are the hater if you hate on someone based on their race or sexual preference.” - Jasmine H., grade 8, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX Gun Control Gun control is an issue in the world that is very important. A lot of people have come face to face with a gun before, and not all of them walked away alive. My concern is about kids, guns, and school shootings. The reason kids die in school shootings is because our government allows guns to get too close to kids. Kids are getting bullied by popular kids, and they end up taking it out on everyone. Me, I am in a school where I see kids getting laughed at and see kids I want to help, but we all know that helping can affect our reputation. Also, the security level in schools is not as tight as it needs to be. Kids can just walk in and shoot at other students. Not many people seem to care enough to make a change. Care, change the laws, keep us safe. - Brandt, age 14, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX A man should not be hated for his sexual preferences. Instead rewarded for the intelligence of his mind and nobility of his heart. - Ross C., grade 8, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX I guess I did not leave it installed in simple mode long enough to see this junk. ![]() |

The students were asked for their thoughts on "making the world a better place". This it entirely appropriate and in line with WCG's mission. I definitely agree with you that the goal of World Community Grid is to make the world a better place but look again at the Mission Statement. "World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity." Their are many facets by which we can make the world a better place, but the Mission Statement of World Community Grid is just a subset of making the world a better place (those that can be modeled by computers and which benefit humanity). That is why I disagree with many of the quotations by the students because they fall outside the scope of the Mission Statement. Every member of World Community Grid came to this site and joined because we had an agreed commonality that no matter how insignificant our contribution could be to the world of science we were willing to give it to benefit our family, friends, and neighbors. When the commonality is broken by the organization going outside the scope of the mission statement, some people will complain and even more leave. Don't forget the rule of 30 in business, for every 30 people that have a problem with a business/product 1 complains and the other 29 just change their lifestyle. I don't want to see this happen to World Community Grid. |

I use neither the graphics or the screen saver. Since these can be turned "on or off", I see this as a non issue.
----------------------------------------Someone mentioned the rule of "30". My country and probably most of the world is ruled by the "1". Unfortunately the squeaky wheel usually gets the grease, regardless of the views of the majority. I do this for science NOT graphics/screensavers. I waited patiently for this project and will crunch it the same as the others, as hard as I can with my resources at hand.
