I use Zone Alarm for my firewall. Ever since I installed BOINC three days ago, I constantly show traffic on my Internet connection, something that never happened when I ran the UD program. When I snooze my BOINC or exit it, my Zone Alarm indicator returns to a normal display of traffic in and out. What's up?

This is normal, BOINC talks to itself......(internally)

This is normal, BOINC talks to itself......(internally) It's true - once I came home and it was shuffling around in my bunny slippers muttering to itself. Thank god it didn't drool, yak or cough up a hair ball - I get enough of that with the cats - well, maybe not the drooling - that would be my department. Boinc uses the "self/my computer" address of 127.0.0.1 (don't remember which port or which protocol) to communicate with different parts of the program. This allows it to use the same code for communicating both locally and remotely - for remote comm as for example with boinc view the program just drops in a different IP address. I suppose I can see the wisdom of doing it this way, but it can be annoying at first. Eventually, you won't even notice it. You can go to the "firewall" page and click on the "expert" tab and create a rule for the communication, but I'm pretty sure that won't stop ZA from continuing to report it as internet activity. ![]() ![]() |

Do you know? Is there any way to set ZA so it doesn't show all this internal BOINC activity? I've gotten used to watching my Zone Alarm tray indicator to confirm legitimate traffic with the outside world. I'd like to keep it that way if I could. Thanks for the help.

I understand what you're saying. I did like that feature of ZA. To get an answer though you'll have to go to the experts at ZA.
----------------------------------------You can try opening a trouble ticket with tech support. Their email address is support@zonelabs.com, but I don't know if they'll respond to a cold email with no trouble ticket number. You might have to go through the web site at Zone Alarm support for XP/2000. Other OS support options are at Other support options - you'll probably want "Product-specific support". You can also post something on the forum - or do a search since I'm sure this has come up before. See ZA forums Let's us know what you find out. ![]() ![]() |
