Now that the oil well is capped...
Between April 20 and July 15, 2010, a generally accepted estimate of nearly 5 million barrels (200 million gallons) of crude oil emerged from the wellhead drilled into the seafloor by BP from the now-destroyed Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Now that the flow of oil has been stopped, the impact of all the spilled oil and natural gas is still being measured. The current moratorium on deep water remains in place as reports from varying scientific groups are at odds about the extent of the remaining oil, and some fishing restrictions have already been lifted. As BP finalizes its work in killing the well, here is a collection of photos from around the Gulf of Mexico over the past couple of months, as all of those affected enter the next phase of this event. New computer model advances climate change research
Scientists can now study climate change in far more detail with powerful new computer software released by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The Community Earth System Model (CESM) will be one of the primary climate models used for the next assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The CESM is the latest in a series of NCAR-based global models developed over the last 30 years. The models are jointly supported by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation, which is NCAR’s sponsor. Scientists and engineers at NCAR, DOE laboratories, and several universities developed the CESM. The new model’s advanced capabilities will help scientists shed light on some of the critical mysteries of global warming, including: • What impact will warming temperatures have on the massive ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica? • How will patterns in the ocean and atmosphere affect regional climate in coming decades? • How will climate change influence the severity and frequency of tropical cyclones, including hurricanes? • What are the effects of tiny airborne particles, known as aerosols, on clouds and temperatures? ..... |

Fire and Flood: Asia's Climate Calamities
It’s a summer of calamitous weather across the Northern Hemisphere, from oppressive heat and wildfire in Russia to devastating downpours in China and Pakistan. Meteorologists such as Peter Stott in Britain’s Met Office and Kevin Trenberth of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research have linked developments across the three countries to a rare atmospheric current in which Asian monsoon rains drive hot air north. With global temperatures rising (the decade from 2000 to 2009 was the hottest on record) they also warn of more extreme weather to come. For example, a warmer atmosphere enables more water to evaporate, increasing the chance of torrential downpours. With thousands of people dead or displaced, our gallery surveys the carnage of summer 2010. |

Atlantic Ocean's garbage patch still a mystery
Scientists say plastic bits of trash may be breaking down into smaller debris A vast patch of garbage spanning a swath of the Atlantic Ocean has long puzzled scientists who wondered where the plastic bits came from and why there's not more of it. Now an exhaustive study, resulting in more than 64,000 bits of plastic collected from the Atlantic Ocean over two decades, has allowed scientists to "go through the garbage" and get to the bottom of some of the mysteries.......... |

New Report Warns of Expanding Threat of Hypoxia in U. S. Coastal Waters Declining oxygen levels in Nation's waters forming dead zones, destroying habitats September 3, 2010 A report issued today by key environmental and scientific federal agencies assesses the increasing prevalence of low-oxygen “dead zones” in U.S. coastal waters and outlines a series of research and policy steps that could help reverse the decades-long trend. The interagency report notes that incidents of hypoxia—a condition in which oxygen levels drop so low that fish and other animals are stressed or killed--–have increased nearly 30-fold since 1960. Incidents of hypoxia were documented in nearly 50 percent of the 647 waterways assessed for the new report, including the Gulf of Mexico, home to one of the largest such zones in the world. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2010/20100903_hypoxia.html

From Yahoo News:
----------------------------------------http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100914...ill-reported-in-louisiana Tidal waters in Louisiana estuaries inundated with fish floating at surface, including a whale, which makes an O2 depleted dead zone cause lesser probable. ![]() The first time I looked at this picture without reading, I thought this was a cracked up road. Unfathomable.
