I read the part where I might get another project's work units if none are available from the one I signed up for. I find it hard to believe that FA@H is running out of units.
----------------------------------------How do I get rid of a downloaded unit? Any reply would be appreciated. Nov.7.2007 I've been prompted to change my attitude about running the Help Conquer Cancer project. The least I can do is help out. From now on it's ½ and ½. I thank you all. One of the new Help Conquer Cancer Project.? Everyone had that auto-added to the My Project profile. If you dont like it, go there, deselect, save and it will stop. All your devices will be updated. If these unwanted jobs still come, visit the Device Manager > Device Profiles and change your selection.
----------------------------------------If you don't want it finished, go to the Tasks tab of the BOINCmgr Advanced View, select the job(s) and abort. After, go to Project tab, select the WCG project and hit Update button in left margin. That will take care of returning the unwanted job and fetch new work, though that might take a little waiting as the update button operation often does not immediately send new work. The Schedulers need to work through to check what needto be done next. Aborting reduces the daily quota, but as soon as a good job has been returned, that quota is restored. cheers

Thank you for your quick reply.
It's not so much that I don't like the Help Conquer Cancer project, for now, I will let the units finish and join in when the FA@H project is done. |

The buzz i hear pressing my ear to the train-rail is, that HCC might be finished long before FA@H experiments can be exhausted.... does not matter as all need to be crunched anyhow. Foremost....
----------------------------------------Keep on crunching with conviction (a strange english word) as else humanity might be convicted.

I have been seeing the fight cancer screen saver coming up over the last day or so. On checking, I see that I have been crunching cancer, not aids, the latter being my choice.
I have deselected the cancer option I did my bit for that for 4 years. I did not select cancer and I see that it was 'automatically added'. What a pity nobody bothered to tell me, because it does undermine the integrity of the project that some anonymous no face can suddenly tell me what I should be doing, rather than what I select, without my consent. Please, if you want to make such a dramatic change, the least courtesy would be an email sertting out the reasons, not just change because some no face so decides. Autocracy? |

This is normal. All new projects are "opted in", except when WCG think it will have a detrimental effect on members' computers. For example, the AC@H bandwidth requirements were so unusual that WCG didn't opt members in for that project.
However, all other projects have been added the same way. You still get to opt out of anything, but new projects are treated this way for two reasons: firstly the majority of members want to see new projects when they launch without having to add them manually, and second, if projects weren't added automatically then many members would find themselves not doing any work when the projects they selected finish. That's not what WCG is about. |

Are you saying that there are no more aids units to work on?

No, there is plenty of work to do.
But WCG have already completed 3 projects - members dedicated to one of those projects alone would have been left crunching nothing. I understand your point, but WCG were forced to compromise on this. |

Now I am protesting, and strongly.
I deselected cancer and had only aids ticked. The new unit is cancer. I looked at the profile, and the system had added a tick cancer. Either we have a choice or not. You are foisting unwanted work on me, so clearly there must be more profit in it for you for my machine to work on cancer, or have I got the wrong end of the stick? It is after all my machine and my electricity, ergo, my choice, nicht waar? |

Oh dear - that shouldn't happen.
It's possible you are having a problem with the device profiles. WCG allows you to choose different project selections for different profiles, so (for example) you could run AIDS on one computer and Cancer on another. If you edited the wrong profile, it may look like the selection changed by itself. If you go to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do you can change all your profiles at once. |
