Certificates for project participation

Hi all--

It would be nice if certificates for project participation were provided similar to those that SETI has (or had?). You just went to the certificate web page, typed in you name, and printed out an "eye popping certificate".

Suggest one or some or all of the following:

1. Certificate for WCG participation

2. Certificate(s) developed by the individual projects for project participation

3. Certificate(s) developed by the teams for team participation

Just a suggestion. Cost would be negligible.

Re: Certificates for project participation

littlepeaks this is a great idea I have my 100 day SETI@home somewhere before I discovered I could do something a little more useful with my PC.

As you can see by the lack of response this is way down on the priority list

It was first requested back in around December 2004 so I think we might have to wait a little longer

It's a shame because at the end of the day this is a people project, people who donate their PC's to this great cause and it would be nice if that could be recognised somehow by Big Blue in this manner.

Just don't hold your breath

Console yourself that each of those Work Units, recognised or not, are expanding the knowledge around Man's Afflictions and the Climate.

Keep crunching littlepeaks everyone else around here appreciates your contribution peace

Some teams have taken matters into their own hands:

Re: Certificates for project participation

Okay, bar other issues, project continuity paramount else why would we be here, the schedule momentarily is inclusion in what is referred to as Build 19 of the website. Think we are on release 16 or 17 atm. This build release is tentative sometime Q1-08.... as said Bar other issues!

Lots of preoccupation with system load balancing, running 5 projects simultaneous with jobs from very short to very long: An impressive piece of stat info is today that WCG is receiving new records of WU's.... at the rate of 2.3 per second on the BOINC system, never equalled with the old UD agent.

Re: Certificates for project participation

Hey I know I know it's a great project from the technical view point I have never had a beef about that - par excellence. And the scientists get their results

It's just the projects not about propeller heads (I include myself in this group) it's about people

People joining up to volunteer the use of their PC

IBM and the current crop of CA's really need to give this angle of the project some serious consideration of how you get hold of and how you keep hold of the biggest bunch of crunchers the world has ever seen.

Then this project would be truely great

and the scientists would get their results and the people the benefit that much more quickly

Regards

Dave

Re: Certificates for project participation

It surely is.

Of course, we can only do our best to attract and retain members. I think my team are doing an excellent job. :-D

We have to be pragmatic, too. It's no use attracting all these members, while at the same time letting the grid go up in flames.

Maintaining one program is a full time job for a team of experts. WCG have to maintain and run up to five simultaneously, as well as all the back end processes.

The certificates were planned for this year. I've seen the issues that caused the schedule to slip, and all I can say is - it's amazing the way that the WCG techs hold it all together. We can wait a little longer for certificates - our points aren't going anywhere.

Re: Certificates for project participation

As ever the point is not taken onboard

I waste my breath once again

Toeing the party line won't get us more crunchers

Making some changes will

Night all

Re: Certificates for project participation

The staff could work on certificates, update the forum, translate the website into Russian, Arabic, Spanish, etc. etc. but the crunching would wind down as a result.

The party line has nothing to do with it. There is interest but it is a matter of time. "Priority" for a project means that something else (this) must have lower priority.

There is some interest and it could be done with volunteer graphic art.

If running 5 project simultaneously is so difficult and time consuming that your grass roots are ignored then run just 4 and devote that time saved to the above. Crunching won't "wind down" as a result the project as a whole will run faster and then you can return to the 5th project which would still complete in the same time frame because you have a bigger happier user base.

Don't forget who does the crunching IBM

"Don't forget who does the crunching."

That statement could be used in other threads. Merge computers and add Russian language for example. I'll just leave it at that because anything else I say wouldn't be nice.
