BOINCers of the World, Unite!
----------------------------------------I have a Ubuntu Core2duo @ 2.7 GHz, which I'd been HPF'ing on since I built it. Recently, I noticed the new Cancer project, so I set up to do only that (unless no Cancer tasks are available). I also set up my old WinXP/AthlonXP 2.2 GHz and 2 GHz machines for this project. During this setup, I noticed the device profile option for workunit caching, and set it to connect about every 5 minutes, and cache 5 days' of work. I also set each PC to "Network Activity Always Available". IIRC, before the "days to cache" setting was installed, I had "connect every 3 days" to do this kind of caching. My old PCs have 15 tasks cached @ 8 hours' estimated time, and 10 tasks @ 12 hours, respectively. But my Core2duo only has 4! Help, I'm going to run out before midnight! What can I do to fix this issue. And BTW, is there a definitive guide to the WCG device profiles, so I can try to optimize my PCs for BOINCage? Thanks. ![]() |

More information, if it helps: I'm running Feisty Fawn (2.6.20-16-generic kernel), and BOINC version 5.4.11. My WinXP PCs are running BOINC version 5.10.22.

Hello goedel,
My first suggestion is to only communicate with the server every few hours. Nothing good is accomplished by trying to communicate more than 10 times a day. Next, see what happens after you have been running several days. Finally, what emergency requires a 5 day cache? This just means that other people have to wait on you to validate their work. Thanks, Lawrence. I reset to connect every .1 days, and cache 3 days of work.
----------------------------------------So far, I got 1 extra task, but that's better than nothing. I hope I get some (if not many) more in the next few hours. I would like to have my completed work tasks reported ASAP, which is why I set it to connect more often. Again, is there a definitive guide to the WCG device profiles, so I can try to optimize my PCs for BOINCage? ![]() |

Okay, I still only have 2 tasks ready to run (estimated 2½ hours), and the ones that are running will run out in 1-2 hours. It's getting a bit scary for me. I don't want to run out by morning.
----------------------------------------I did a little more research about upgrading to a higher BOINC version. This link has a DEB package to go to 5.8.17. However, this one seems to indicate that there wouldn't be much improvement until I get to version 5.10, but that 5.10 does "Support new work_buf_additional_days preference." I infer that lower versions do not. I don't want to break anything in my Ubuntu install, so I may just go back to the "connect every 3 days" in the device profile. ![]() |

Okay, I finally got a few day's more work to my Core2duo PC.
----------------------------------------I set up a BOINC "work" device profile (connect every 2 days and cache 1 day [presumably ignored]), and I'll use that on the Core2duo PC, and the default on the Athlon PCs - connect every .1 day, cache 2 days. I hope that works out okay. I'd appreciate any further advice/links. ![]() |

The recently added options to the WCG Device profiles, since introduction of the Power Saving profile a few weeks ago, only work for the 5.10 BOINC releases. Bit of a snag considering 5.8.16 is still the Linux version offered on the WCG download page. Sample is 'Cache' aka the 'Additional WorkBuffer' field.
----------------------------------------As for your definitive "guide", there is a "Work in Progress" Start Here forum FAQ. It includes a translation table where the deviating WCG field descriptions have the standard BOINC description with it. Makes it easier for those coming to WCG who already were running BOINC elsewhere. A classic here is "Project Weight" which everywhere else is called "Resource Share". Native tong English will doubtless make the connection, but not necessarily the native foleign language visitors ;-) Yesterday located a table and what they do (why waste time re-describing the wheel). Before appending want to add the BOINC minimum version numbers for the newer fields, so folk know what is required to get benefit.... the extra motivator to upgrade. ttyl

The official BOINC wiki tabulates preferences with the versions in which they were introduced. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/PrefsReference
(I wrote the page, so any errors are all my own.) |

Funny the consistency with this:
----------------------------------------http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/GlobalPrefs (which is what i was looking at) Thanks, had inserted the release versions in the screen-capture before. (really like duplication of effort) ![]() On quick peruse, thought the VM/Pagefile option was there already when i started with BOINC on 5.4.

It's mostly pre-release information. People (bless them) get confused when presented with information about a feature that doesn't even exist.
----------------------------------------It could be worse - the old documentation listed new features as fact, without any indication of which version anything related to. edit: the page history is complicated. Yes, it was based on the page you linked. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 13, 2007 10:36:21 AM] |
