Third party utilities for BOINC?

Are there any third party utilities for BOINC?

Specfically, something that will give me audible notification when a checkpoint has been reached.

Plus, I'm curious as to other goodies that I know I'll want as soon as I see them.

I tried to search for "third party", "third", and "party" (in the BOINC Agent Support forum) but I didn't see anything that looked promising.

Hi debsgr8,
The main third-party utility is BOINCView ( http://www.boinc-wiki.info/index.php?title=BoincView ). See also http://www.boinc-wiki.info/index.php?title=Category:BOINC_Third_Party_Tool
I do not know of any utility for checkpoint notification.

Perhaps we need to go to the heart of the issue: why do you want to be notified of every checkpoint?

Don't forget: BOINC is open source, so even if nothing suitable exists, someone can create something for you....

Re: Third party utilities for BOINC?

Interesting thought !
We could hook more handicapped folks, in this case the blind, if we made Boinc more friendly in this area. Something we may need to take a closer look at. . . . . . . say an edition that expands I/O with audio tactal responces ? Something good to be tossed around where ideas can florish.

The best place for suggestions like this is the BOINC Roadmap thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15117

As it happens, there is a ticket open for the issue you mention: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/147

I'd be interested to know the reason too Debs - don't keep us in suspense! smile

Re: Third party utilities for BOINC?

So I can restart my pooter without losing crunch time. If I could hear it, I would be able to do other things, go to other rooms of the house, etc. without having to sit and watch for "World Community Grid|[checkpoint_debug] result xxx_x checkpointed" to appear.

Whenever I needed to reboot my pooter at grid.org, Roman had this third party tool call UD Monitor. I miss those conveniences of audible notification and "after next save > reboot -or- shutdown -or- send/receive -or- logoff -or- stop the client".

Re: Third party utilities for BOINC?

From debs 'single core' crunching perspective it makes perfect sense, but to say that some projects checkpoint every few minutes, regardless the speed of the CPU.

Soon as talking a dual core, the dilemma arises as to which checkpoint to choose. The one that comes with a science that runs a checkpoint every few minutes or the one with the long checkpoints running every 30 minutes. (In Gest), than we should teach BOINC to give a different beep for a different project. I don't hear certain frequency bandwidths, so will need a pitch control too, and for those that have a dual quad at 3.6ghz, there needs to be a switch or a virtual hammer.

Whilst it s a feature to consider, it will be low prio because....

.... The recommended, my recommendation too, is to use the new 'idle suspend' switch in the website profile that goes with version 5.10.22 (not sure which point release starts to support this) and set the computer to auto-hibernation. That's a WXP function and part of PC hardware since about 1999. On resume no second is lost because the job picks up exactly where it left off, no waiting for checkpoints required. I tried it and it works a treat!

The Start Here forum has quite a few topics these days with relation to BOINC. Do read as it gives insight (or incite if you will) with possible ohs and ahs. There is a topic on loss-less hibernation which goes for both BOINC and UD.... the times they are achanging.

have a nice day lasses and lads.

(hiding now for being accused again for referring members to Help and Start Here self help portals.)
