[Resolved] Instant "finish", Output file dddt... absent

Both my computers run Ubuntu Linux, with iptables firewall on but allowing all outbound traffic, and are behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

Sometimes the network goes down and requires rebooting the router; this is a known issue with this model of router and can happen when BOINC isn't running, but it seems to have increased from about once a day with BOINC only on the older computer, to several times a day after I installed BOINC on the new computer. Since the router is shared with 3 other people, this isn't really acceptable.

Checking the BOINC messages finds not only the expected failed connections, but dddt units that seem to "finish" in 1 second then find they have no output file to report:

I have now disabled the dddt project and am waiting to see if this fixes the problem.

Also, currently running are two hpf units that seem to have started together when the computer was switched on; shouldn't they save and restart from where they left off? It's rarely on continuously for the 16 hours they take, so there's no point running them if they can't.

hi rachel37,

With lack of router stability it's bound that you get damaged files., although most times BOINC is able to sense if a file transfer was incomplete.

The HPF2 jobs as any other WCG jobs checkpoints frequently. Long as you do a proper shut-down and not a Power switch off type close, your jobs should resume long as sufficient time is allowed to reach the next checkpoint. With a C2D T7500 you'll have them at least every 15-20 minutes if not more frequent.

WCG just promoted version 5.10.21 to the recommended level for Linux, so you might want to get that. A substantial number of fixes were applied and 5.10.8 was never a recommended version here.

WCG just promoted version 5.10.21 to the recommended level for Linux, so you might want to get that. A substantial number of fixes were applied and 5.10.8 was never a recommended version here.

I've never had any damaged file issues with this router in anything else (including a complete Ubuntu install), only downloads simply failing or stopping part-way through.

Glad at least BOINC could be excluded from the causes v.v. the Router.

As to why DDDT is a victim, don't know. Some ISPs do things to certain files transmitted and when they arrive and get started by BOINC they don't check and the job aborts.

As for telling Ubuntu, there are more point-releases of BOINC then weekends in a month.... they'll catch up, Meantime fetch the official copy from here:

I've been playing with the Gutsy LiveCD (Linux ultra noob here) and got bogged down on something as mundane as navigating a terminal window to the place where i saved the WCG download (guess it's the same as a command line window blushing

). Had the WiFi up in just under 30 minutes and still no more exited as with Windows. Webbrowsing was slow in their version of FireFox, but the BOINC installerfile download of 4mb was amazingly fast. Parked Ubuntu at that point as I'm no fan of having to navigate command line windows and converting with chmod to make it runable. InstalllShield may be the pits, but at least its the pits i know.

I disabled dddt, which seemed to fix the problem, but I just noticed that hcc and faah now seem to have it too. I will try disabling these as well, as hpf2 seems to work.

Since I am not currently on the dodgy router, it would appear that this problem is unrelated to it. I am still running Ubuntu default BOINC (5.10.8).

Installed 32 bit libraries (sudo apt-get install ia32-libs), which appears to have fixed the problem: hcc is now running.

hcc, faah and dddt now all working.

Note however that I would not have known anything was wrong had I not checked the messages trying to track down the router problem; as long as work is available for a project that does run correctly (currently hpf2) then the only harm done would appear to be a moderate waste of bandwidth, but what will happen when this project ends, or to people who don't have it selected: would BOINC eventually inform the user if several consecutive units failed in this way, or would it just keep downloading and failing indefinitely, wasting far more bandwidth (possibly overloading the WCG servers and/or running up large bills for users on pay by usage internet service) while doing no useful work?

There are at least two levels of protection against repetitive errors. Firstly, many kinds of transient error are caught by the client, and if it keeps failing the work is aborted. Then, there are work units returned as errors to the server. Too many errors and the WCG scheduler will reduce your work unit quota, until you are limited to just a single work unit per day until the problem is fixed.

There are still degenerate cases that BOINC handles badly, but they tend to be rare enough that we can deal with them individually, assuming the affected member tells us about the problem. Of course, there may be other problems we never hear about - but we can't do anything about that!
