confused Does NT4.0, Dual Core (or multicore) Systems and BOINC work? (98se and dual cores dont mix)

As the saga continues, we join Courine in the quest for getting her dual core running on both of them for the HCC project. It all started back......

"While im cooking my brains out, does anyone here have a duel core machine running win98se? This machine was linux, but until the new linux HCC problem can be worked out, i can use an old copy of 98se in the meantime.

I have it running, but the second core seems to be not working.

Is it known that this configuation works: 98se/2 cores/boinc?"

Edit: The answer is no. It will boot, but will see only 1 core. Next question is "Does NT4 work with multicore machines?"

Re: 98se, 2 cores and boinc!

Unless I am greatly mistaken, Windows 98 simply doesn't know about the second core. Nothing to do with BOINC.

Re: 98se, 2 cores and boinc!

If I remember correctly, Courine has a copy of NT which should support dual core, but I don't know if any other drivers will be needed for your MB.

Re: 98se, 2 cores and boinc!

You need an older version of BOINC as support for W95/NT4 was dropped. Think it ended with 5.8.16

Added: Yes it is and here's the download link: http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.8.16_windows_intelx86.exe

@KLiK, probably courine does not own a legal copy of W2K or WXP (for installation on additional PCs).

Re: 98se, 2 cores and boinc!

Darn!

I'll look and see if I can get a cheap copy of xp somewhere.

I just need this machine to be a big landisk. It needs only be seen as a shared folder in my net. If nt works for this, would it be a problem running older boinc versions. And will HCC work on older code?

Re: 98se, 2 cores and boinc!

5.10 is just a large gloss up, so 5.8.16, link above works fine. You don't need any of the bells to crunch any of the WCG projects.

biggrin Re: NT4, 2 cores and boinc!

good! biggrin

I'll let the current WU finish. Then try NT again. If the disc is bad, I can get a backup copy from a friend.

BTW Sek, Want to help with the team challenge invitationals in jan.? It will be like the "christians vs dutch power cows" race. I will write thread as I did in the past. Send me an email, I can fill you in on the rest.
