First, I just scanned down the subject lines in this forum to see if this question has already been discussed, and didn't find anything.
Second, I probably should have switched over to BOINC a long time ago, but just never got around to it. I kept using UD with the throttle control set to 100%, which I assumed was giving me maximum crunching ability that would not be improved by simply switching to BOINC. HOWEVER, since using BOINC now for just two days, the points that I've received _GREATLY_ exceed what I ever generated using UD. Record points for two days in a row. I don't understand it. My computer is NOT a dual core, so I thought the choice of agent wouldn't really matter. Is my computer doing more work with BOINC, or are the points just inflated? If BOINC is actually capable of completing more work, than I think this should be made very clear to all members, and the UD agent should be removed from the WCG webpage as an alternative download. Thanks. |

The UD agent is already being phased out.
BOINC only has a substantial advantage over UD when used on a multicore machine. There are several factors that can affect points. The UD system had a cap on the processor performance. This penalised the fastest machines, since they should have scored above this cap. There are other factors, too. Fundamentally, though, the credit calculations are different. The conversion factor between the two systems was fair when it was originally calculated - I have no idea whether it is still accurate. It's still reasonably accurate, though. It's an average - some computers benefit from BOINC, others from UD. I can reassure you, though, that WCG have avoided the "credit escalation" that some projects suffer from, where work units are made more efficient, but still awarded the same credit (even though they represent less work). |
