BOINC: Minimum Quorum & Initial Distribution of Work Units (Tasks)

The subject terms can be found on the Results Status page work unit detail header (Click on link in Result Name column).

Minimum Quorum: The number of error free result copies needed to be returned by "different" devices aka hosts, to permit validation and computation of granted credit for processing contributed.

Initial Distribution: The number of work unit copies send to different devices (hosts) for processing.

Depending on the type of science, size of work unit, size of data transmission, distribution complexity and other criteria, different numbers of copies will be send out for processing. The present projects and numbers are:
  • Minimum Quorum 1, Initial Distribution 1
° Say NO to Schistosoma (SN2S)
° Computing for Sustainable Water (CFSW)
° GO Fight Against Malaria (GFAM)
° Drug Search for Leishmaniasis (DSFL)
    ° The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 (CEP2) Phase 2 (Since Nov.2011)
° Computing for Clean Water (C4CW)
° Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together (DDDT)
    ° FightAIDS@Home (FA@H or FAAH)
° Help Fight Childhood Cancer (HFCC)
° Influenza Antiviral Drug Search (FLU1)
  • Minimum Quorum 2, Initial Distribution 2
    ° Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 (DDDT2), type A, B & C
    ° The Clean Energy Project (CEP) Phase I, type A & B (Ennnnnn_nnnA_nnnnnnnn)
    ° Help Conquer Cancer (HCC)
° Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy, Phase 2 (HCMD2)
  • Minimum Quorum 5, Initial Distribution 10
° The Clean Energy Project (CEP) Phase I, type C (Ennnnnn_nnnC_nnnnnnnn)
  • Minimum Quorum 10, Initial Distribution 10
    ° AfricanClimate@Home, Phase 1 (AC@H or ACAH) - Complete
  • Minimum Quorum 10, Initial Distribution 19
° Nutritious Rice for the World (RICE) ** - Complete
  • Minimum Quorum 15, Initial Distribution 19
    ° Human Proteome Folding, Phase 2 (HPF2)

** Due to the nature of the RICE computations it can happen that parts of the initial distribution set will not be send out until the first results have been returned. This is to ensure that all tasks compute unique structures, thus optimizing project efficiency.
Sample of a HCC (Help Cure Cancer) work unit detail page header:

Project Name: Help Conquer Cancer
Created: 07/27/2008 20:28:28
Name: X0000048900526200505181523
Minimum Quorum: 2
Initial Replication: 2

For each faulty (error) or not returned copy (No Reply) an extra one is distributed to make up the difference until minimum quorum is reached. This is with restriction if too many faulty copies are returned, at which time the work unit is taken out of circulation for technical review. When the original , make up and extra copies have to be completed is explained in the BOINC: Deadlines to Return Work Units (Tasks) FAQ.

Which copy a device/host has received from the Initial Distribution is indicated by the suffix of a work unit name. The first copy is marked as _ 0 for example:

X0000048900526200505181523_ 0--
X0000048900526200505181523_ 1--

The host's copy shows on the Work Unit Name detail screen highlighted with an orange background.
