I think you all know i am raising my oldest Grandson. Well Jacob gets his drivers license in a few days and it should be great time around here for awhile--plus Crew is startin back up--starting to feel a little better--keep on crunching--Gerald smile

Ah, new drivers. Let them buy a car - something BIG, OLD and not all the same color! laughing Airline pilots call them their work cars - one they can drive and park at the airport and not care what or if something happens to it. Too bad they can't get an Abrams M1.

I still like the idea myself of what I think about doing when my now almost 5 yr old daughter reaches driving age - arrange for her to spend a Friday evening in the nearest level 1 trauma hopsital's ER (I shouldn't have to say a word) and send her to one of those driving schools for chauffers where they teach you how to spin out, skid, do the full throttle reverse 180's and such. Something tells me I'm gonna pity the poor guy who gets out of line with her on a date too. laughing

Re: Processing Power, oh if only Tim the toolman was here!

Hey, blizzie, of these 7 CPUs, what do you recommend?

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6550 (2x 2.33GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1333FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6750 (2x 2.66GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1333FSB) [+ $20]

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6850 (2x 3.0GHz/4MB L2 Cache/1333FSB) [+ $100]

[=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 (4x 2.4GHz/8MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) [+ $100]

[=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6700 (4x 2.66GHz/8MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) [+ $360]

[=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX6850 (4x 3.0GHz/8MB L2 Cache/1333FSB) [+ $810]

[=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core Processor QX9650 (4x 3.0GHz/12MB L2 Cache/1333FSB) [+ $810]

The 9650 uses the 45nm structure and lower power usage than pretty much any of the other quad cores, which on a cruncher that runs a lot of hours adds up, but ultimately, what you can afford dictates.

I usually build the best system I can afford, saves having to upgrade quite so often, and plan so that I am upgrading cards and memory down the road, as opposed to the core components such as motherboard and processor.

I hear that the next generations of processors is going to be using a new footprint, so I don't know how much more you will be able to drop on a 775 pin motherboard.

The Nehalem Intel CPUs will be using a socket 1366 socket.

This should surface in quarter three of this year. But I sense delays.
Q6600 is the best to go at the moment. Yes the 45 nm are great but they can't take as much heat and voltage as a 65 nm. The 45nm Quads are not out yet, with the exception of the extreme edition. Even so, they are not really worth it until the price drop.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 24 smilesmile

Yes, we lost the first and will lose the current one but the first was a great success. We had a lot of cross posting with the Edwardians and I'd enjoy another match with them in the future.

I'd be in for another too, Keith, but that decision isn't mine to make.

In the meantime, I'll just watch this space for round four of the car-boys' debate. So far it's "the old veteran" outscoring "the young buck" by a margin of 2.5 to 1, with bonus points to the veteran for originality.
Most entertaining.

68 Chevy PU--350 four bolt main with a 4/11 gear--runs pretty good but no top end and the wind blows those imports off the road

Oooooo....I like! My first vehicle was a 67 Chevy Belair with the 286 V8 and 103K miles. All for $300. laughing Took it out on a stretch of then empty freeway to nowhere, floored it and blew out the carbon. Got another 30K miles out of it. Come to think of it, that was the last Detroit car I've had. Not saying much though since these days, I get a decade out of each vehicle. biggrin

LOL@American cars. No offense, but the Americans have no idea what they're doing when it comes to engineering engines. how much displacement do these V8's have? And how many HP? Mine gets 242 out of a 1.8, that's 134 bhp per litre of displacement. With a new turbo, I'll make 350-400 which comes to 194 bhp per litre. The new Corvette, even in top trim makes 505 out of a 7.1 litre V8. That's a paltry 71 bhp per litre or HALF what my Audi gets. And fuel economy? I get 29 highway and 23 city. Corvette - 16 city 26 highway. Ouch, don't get pwnt.

Score 1 million points for the imports, 3 points for the Detroit "muscle."

"Lord I pray to not be lead into temptation so how come I get this???" devilish

[youaskedforit]Sigh, another gasoline-refined testosterone kid.....

Okay, Jonathan, I highly suspect that, even as a professional student, you're still too young to have any context for American cars from the 50's and 60's. I don't have much context for an old Dusey but I can appreciate what it was at the time. Detroit didn't sell cars in the 50's and 60's - they were Madison Ave. pros back then and conned....er sold us on the driving "experience" and with gas at 3-4 gallons a buck, they had us eating out of their hands. They gave us the land whales for those who wanted the "luxury" experience, the "I'm on my way up" sedans for us boomers getting started with new families and "muscle" cars for the young snots who hadn't settled down. Everything was mechanical so you could tinker, twiddle and duct tape to your hearts content if that was your thing. Customizing was a viable option to most anyone who got the urge.

Then in '73, reality hit and it's been a tragedy ever since. I won't say Detroit hasn't improved. They have, just not far enough. I mean I don't have to worry about feeling that sitting in the front seat driving down a freeway is just like being in the no-tell motel's vibra-beds these days. How else could a 4-cyl. VW keep up with a Buick 442 special that's trying to lose the VW? Oh Detriot's never had a monopoly on mediocrity. My brother drove a Fiat Spyder in college. I thought he enjoyed tinkering with it every weekend and engineers do love to tinker. Truth was, he didn't have a choice. German stuff isn't in much of a position to brag these days. Mercedes has nothing on Detroit these days and that awful merger only made it worse. If German was your only choice, the smart money would be on BMW. Every brand has a chance at a decent model, even the worst models have individual cars that the owner raves over because everything keeps working right. My Dad would still admit regretting trading in that 55 Ford after driving it for 13 years. Then there's the VW Jetta diesel too from back in the 80's. I'm sure I could appreciate having a Ferrari or Lamborghini or even a high-end Porsche but where could I REALLY drive that here? It's not like you can go open 'er up on those Montana highways any ol' Saturday you feel like it. Must be nice sitting in Boston's well-known traffic doing the 5MPH tap and grind in such a powerful car. Kinda like Capt. Kirk doing the Earth-Moon shuttle run in the Enterprise.[/youaskedforit] tongue laughing

([gunner], this one's gratis. Enjoy!)
