AC@H with 512Mb machine

I happened to be sitting here when the small computer got 5 AC@H that were released for download this morning.

Page fault delta for AC@H on two systems ranges all over the place from 0 to 12,000/second. That's not unreasonable, compared to the HCC which were giving a constant 45,000/second. (The new beta should fix that one.)

One phenomenon I'm noticing is that the 512Mb machine is very sluggish when running AC@H. That just means that there's not much memory left for anything else. They are completing correctly and run smoothly on this AMD64 2.0GHz OC to 2.4GHz. One just finished and a new one is starting. DDD-T doesn't have a large impact there. It's mainly a crunch-only machine.

I'll surf elsewhere on the 3Gb or 1.5Gb AMD64 2.4GHz stock speed computers until they are done.

More specifically, under Linux (and I would guess Windows too, unless you limit your disk cache size) AC@H writes such massive files that it causes the operating system to cache hundreds of MB in RAM, causing programs (including AC@H itself) to have to swap.

I wonder if AC@H really needs 2 identical huge files? (output.ckp.nc and wcg_checkpoint_00.ckp) Some of the time, output.nc is also identical to the other 2, making 3 identical copies of a ~150MB file. If it only wrote out one of them, the OS would do much less disk caching and system performance would be better.

Re: AC@H with 512Mb machine

It does do a broadband test to see whether you can handle a 10 Mb download quickly.

There are only a bit more than 800 workunits per batch, so we'll make do. We're well into the first phase, with batch #22.

Actually, 80% completion is imminent with ACH1_22 of 27

If you see #28, you'll know that they are going to 52, unless something changed.

As you know we are currently running through 52 weeks of simulations through 82 different parameter variations.

Re: AC@H with 512Mb machine

Each work unit covers 2 weeks. 27 work units cover a year plus several days.

Re: AC@H with 512Mb machine

Bits and Bops LH is close-r me thinketh

  • It's 27 periods of 2 weeks consecutive (think the English call it fortnights)
  • Each 2 week period covers 82 adjacent 'areas' of 30x30km in SA.
  • Each of the 82 is send out in 'Init Distribution of 10' (820 total)
  • Each 2 week period is dependent on the calculations of the previous 2 week result. knreed wrote that he prioritizes (joysticks) the speed for the blocks that have fallen behind thru deadlines alterations.

Think the simulations cover 2003 when looking in the result log and last I saw it said 2003/9/10 and the one falling in yesterday night and just completing said

As for the files, at least there is a rename of a previous checkpoint before the writing of a new checkpoint following the timestamps. Guess it's fair as system crashing during a checkpoint write leaves no recovery point to go back to. There are approx 54 of these events (coincidence as 27x2 is also 54).

And as i just compared using Process Explorer 'it' on a Vista/Q6600 v a XP/P4 (with 1.5gRam) there could be some gained by looking at PF and PF Delta before moving from small to large scale predicting for Africa. Vista had 60 million versus 6.5 billion page faults for XP. Vista showed 6 minutes kernel time. Did not record the amount on XP. Anyone volunteering? Just know that on P4 the credits have consistently been cut by about 33% (similar to old HCC 5.15)!

Today is pasta day.... going for the linguini .... and lots of wise guys here ;-)

    Re: AC@H with 512Mb machine

Now, with one more change to the 90000 hectares to make the units compatible...

Each 2 week period covers 82 adjacent 'areas' of 30x30km in SA.

    82 areas of 149.129086 x 149.129086 furlongs per fortnight.
