The grid software is installed on my lap top. I travel during the week with work, during this time I am on dial up once or twice per day. A queue server or buffer would allow me to maximise the processing my laptop can accomplish.

Currently we really don't need intermediate queue servers since we have built a server farm which can support millions of users. When we get into even higher numbers, we will consider this option as well as others, but we expect that to not be required for years. Sorry, but.... You expected that no queue is needed - I expected no WCG is needed on my machines! Email me if the software can download more than one.... A queue is good for this project and for several users!! I`m doing my last work until a queue, or something else, is installed or added to the software! |

I've got "only" 4 Computers, 1 with internetaccess. I need a queue, too! ![]() This is pretty thoroughly discussed in this thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1108 Short answer is: yes it's possible, no we don't recommend it (see thread for details). If you have 4 computers and only 1 with Internet access you have 2 possible solutions: 1: Buy a router. They're inexpensive these days. 2: Use Windows Internet Connection Sharing to share your internet connection so all machines have access.

1: I willl not buy a router only for WCG!
2: My Internet Connection is changing everyday, so I had to edit the Windows Internet Connection Sharing Config everyday (everytime i dial in)! 3: I will look for UD Monitor |

A queue is a must, and it is incredibly short sighted of the admins/techs to say "We don't think you need one". I run the WCG on a work computer, which is not permanently connected to the internet - I have to authorise my access once a day, and at some point in the evening I am automatically disconnected. I leave my PC on 24x7. If a work unit completes wihle I am disconnected, I cannot start a new one until the next morning when I authorise web access again. Therefore my PC has been idle all night when it could have been working on the next unit from a local queue. This is of course worse on the weekend, when the PC is going to be idle most of the weekend without a queue.
If you're serious about maximising the global computing power on this project, you need a queue. |

It would be good for people who use a modem and don't get on that often, besides, 1-4MB isn't way too much...

If you follow up on Rick Alther's link, you will see that the real problem is that the server will soon start issuing extra duplicate Work Units to other people so that the queue only gives the illusion of efficiency. This showed up back in November when a bug kept the Agent from returning results from a few non-convergent Work Units. Pretty soon everybody was crunching the same small set of Work Units, as the server kept issuing them to more and more people.
The first progress report will probably at least mention some of the reasons why Rosetta Work Units are treated this way. Other projects may work differently. |

If you're serious about maximising the global computing power on this project, you need a queue. First of all, if you read the post by Viktors, he misunderstood the question and was referring to our servers. i.e. he thought the question was if we were going to have dedicated WU servers. I sympathize with this problem, but the fact remains that the current UD architecture is not designed to handle client side queuing of workunits. You can use 3rd party tools to accomplish this but as I mentioned in the other thread, it's very easy to cause the system to send out unnecessary duplicate work, causing an overall delay in the project. If you're going to use this tool, please only queue up one or two extra workunits (if you have a fast machine). No more or you'll just be delaying the project and you'll just be crunching workunits that are no longer relevant even though you'll still get points for them.

UD Monitor or the WCG-Client is only running on one computer, that´s f***ing s**t! Sorry about my open words, but so it is! (and sorry about my english ;-)) I think i will crunsh the last 4 WU I´ve got in UD Monitor, when they are finished, i´ll return temporarily to Seti! Aliens - I`m comeing ![]() |
