I'm working to get my company to sign up with WCG or something similar. This would put over a 1000 computers to good use when idle. The only potential problem is the issue with security. The IT depertment is researching this, but I wondered if other groups have already answered the question.
We deal with a lot of propriatory data and are big on security. Would having an open link with the grid to get new packets, etc open us up for any kind of security risk? They are also worried that the data that gets sent to the computers might interfere with our GLP programs or interact with them in some way. (That one doesn't make sense to me but what do I know? :P ) Is there any reccomendations or reassurances I can hand to IT to put their minds at ease? |

Please ask them to contact World Community Grid directly. If they fill out the partner form then they will be assigned a personal contact who can answer any questions in detail, and assist in mass deployment. WCG really do everything they possibly can to assist large companies to join the grid.
But you will want some answers now. Here are some answers to common questions: World Community Grid isn't merely funded by IBM - it is managed and run by IBM staff. Can I trust the software? This is a good question, and breaks down into two parts: can I be sure the software is what it says it is, and can I be sure the software has no known vulnerabilities? Can I be sure the software is what it says it is? All the World Community Grid software is digitally signed. The BOINC software is signed by the University of California. Can I be sure the software has no known vulnerabilities? IBM do regular security audits of the software. This includes the agent software that you download, and the project software written by the scientists. The BOINC software is open source, so security bugs are usually found very quickly. Finally, you will be asking "How is the grid kept safe from hackers?" The World Community Grid servers are located in a secure IBM data center. Their physical security is as good as it gets. All the communication between World Community Grid and your computer uses SSL. This is the same level of encryption used by websites for online shopping and banking. The last part is up to you. You need to keep your own computer secure and up to date, running the latest firewall and antivirus software. Your company's IT department will already have this one locked down. |
