PC Rebuild Question

I have a Windows machine running BOINC 5.10.30 that I must clear the HDD and reinstall Windows, etc. All components will remain the same. I would like to have the same machine id when I reinstall BOINC.

I found the following link to doing this but have a question about it.

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16521

The link has "backup Critical files like client_state.xml, account_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml, global_prefs.xml and global_prefs_override.xml, sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml

The question is with the word "like". Can anyone tell me if that list is complete or if there are others I should backup as well?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Re: PC Rebuild Question

If you take a full back-up of BOINC and it's data directories and follow A/B/C you should be all fine. Making sure the 6 items in the "Alternate identification method at World Community Grid" are same too will lead to a next to guaranteed success.... except one who reported it failed, most all continue exactly where they left off.

tongue Re: PC Rebuild Question

I would suggest you the following way:

1. Stop the boinc service/program
2. Backup the complete boinc folder in program files.
3. Reinstall your pc
4. Install boinc 5.10.30, but don't subscribe to any project
5. Stop the boinc service/program
6. Restore your backup
7. Start the boinc service/program
8. Check, if everything works fine
9. Upgrade to the latest boinc version (5.10.45)

EDIT: OK, Sek, you were faster... But I'm more detailed...

Re: PC Rebuild Question

Thank you both!!

With the exception of the full backup I was planning to do all the other steps.

Again, thank you for both the information and quick response

Re: PC Rebuild Question

Just in case you don't have the installation file for the old boinc version anymore, you can do the following:

Perform step 9 between step 1 and 2, and in step 4 you install the current version of boinc.

Re: PC Rebuild Question

Thanks! Turns out I do have the .30 install. My "pack rat" method is part of the reason I have to do the rebuild...all clogged up with xx generations of everyting I ever installed, downloaded, wrote, etc biggrin

Re: PC Rebuild Question

In Reality, not even a reinstall is required if running in Single User. Just restore, create a new shortcut and go. The service install is the one that should be installed prior to the restore. All packages including the 5.10.30 can be fetched here: http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.10.30_windows_intelx86.exe .... just change the version number to get the one you want. Till then, just start with 5.10.30 and upgrade when happy.

Re: PC Rebuild Question

Thank you Sekerob! I'll use your approach of backup / rebuild / load and then upgrade. I have a mixed bag of PC's running mostly .45. I hadn't upgraded this one because I know I had to do the rebuild.

To both you and totto73 thank you again!
