It's not just freebie food aid that causes shortages ...
Here in Australia - driest "inhabited" continent on the planet - we grow rice, and used to export it. But there's no water in at least 1 of our main irrigation areas, the Murrumbidgee in New South Wales, and the drought is probably permanent to some extent. The Ricegrowers' Coop there is offering growers A$550/ton up front, vs about A$330 last year, but there are very few takers. Rice in our supermarkets is now Product of Thailand or India. What's that doing to the prices in those countries? Aust average annual rainfall trend map(s) Eventually we need to be feeding fewer mouths! Meanwhile we can try to increase the supply of rice or develop acceptable substitutes. Can we breed dryland rice? Trivia? A Chinese friend told me that rice is not The traditional Chinese carbohydrate, except in the south. In much of the country, especially the north, it's way too cold to grow rice, and barley was the staple food until more modern transport spread the rice habit. Bing (tr: Ice) was born up north in Harbin, so he should know. |
