Who wants to know?

ISB staff,

What organizations have made formal requests, or are already on board to receive this research once it is completed?

I'm just looking for a broad overview with an emphasis on Canadian researchers tongue , not a detailed list.

Thanks in advance,
Ripcat

cool Re: Who wants to know?

Yesterday, while I was trolling for news, I noticed that Dr. Richard Bonneau was scheduled to deliver a second seminar at UBC (British Columbia) on 28 Feb, in addition to the one he gave on 13? Jan that I copied the abstract notice for and put in the News thread. I also came across seminar dates for 24 Feb and 4 March, but without any interesting information. Looks like Rich is jetting around and passing the word in academic circles, in addition to everything else. The only research news mentioning the HPF project was another ISB research report on yeast, saying that they had studied protein-stripping at the ends of teleomeres and were looking for protein analogues in human cancers. No mention of the HPF project but they added a HPF URL in the Research section, so my guess is that that is one of the places where they intend to look for analogous human proteins.

Re: Who wants to know?

Maybe Dr. Bonneau could post his schedule for seminars that are open to the public? Members in BC may have liked to go, if possible, to put a face on this project.

Which brings up the idea of ISB posting video on their site of anything that may be of interest to members here.

Perhaps WCG/IBM could do the same. It would be nice to see public announcements here rather than at xyznews.com. smile

The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) will hold its fourth annual international symposium on Sunday, April 24th and Monday, April 25th at the ISB research facility in Seattle, Washington. This year’s symposium will address the significant computational challenges in systems biology.
Systems biology is a new field and is continually changing. These changes pose new computational challenges on an unprecedented scale.
. . . . . . . . . .
These and other challenges will be addressed at the symposium by a distinguished group of scientists, all experts in the field of computational biology. The Institute is anticipating approximately 250 attendees at the symposium and will begin at 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 24th with a keynote address from Nathan Myhrvold, Founder of Intellectual Ventures, LLC.

Other featured speakers include (in alphabetical order):
Viktors Berstis Senior Software Engineer, IBM Global Services

Rich Bonneau Senior Research Scientist, Institute for Systems Biology

Just for fun, I will point out that you have to run fast to keep up with Dr. Bonneau, as you can see at http://www.capitolpeakultras.com/2004CP50kRESULTS.htm
Results for the Inaugural Capitol Peak 50K Ultramarathon

Place Name Sex Age City State Run Time
15 Richard Bonneau M 29 Seattle WA 6:06:09

The forum software keeps that from lining up.

Re: Who wants to know?

Hello to the great white north. I don't know for sure what canadian
reserachers will use this stuff, but I've been talking with people
(in the new UBiC center being put together by Francis Oullette)
and I would think that they would be among the group to get early
access to the database (pre pub) if they want it... still early there.
Nothing more formal from any institutions, Canadian or otherwise yet,
still a bit early for my "just in time" style of science, which stems from
my "way to many projects, can't say no" philosopy... More on this
if I get any info in the next few months.

I'll be back at UBC durring the first week of may... no time yet
,but if you'se crunchers in vancouver want to come to the seminar then
I'll post the time and place here, let me know...

i'm in NY (NYU) on the 7th.

i'm in baltimore (Johns Hopkins) on the 5th or 6th (still
schedualing) in any case I can post this time and place as well.

talk in seattle on the 24th at the ISB symposium, mabey
we can get a few people who're grid participants to get in?

thanks for the interest.

Re: Who wants to know?

alot of people want recognition whatever for thier very fantastic efforts at grid computing.

But it was decided long ago internet time, about 1999 in the origanal SETI effort that we would just crunch for the fun of it. and so it goes to this very day.

SO TO ALL OF YOU THAT FEEL ABIT LEFT OUT WELL THAT IS THE LIFE OF THE CRUNCHER. DEAL WITH IT.

iF YOU WANT THE ORIGNL TEXTS OR POSTS CHECK OUTT THE SETI AT HOME ARCHIVES IT IS ALL THIER.

I was sorry to see this ground swell of charity i was one who supported the efforts at recognition,

I was shot down.

By the way I have been chunching since the days of bovine and dnet,

so I was thier!!!

Crunch for the fun of it?

what? huh? Why are you mad?
I'm not crunching for "the fun of it".
I'm working on a problem that I think,
and several other people think, is important.
This isn't some macho thing and I don't care much
about the history of grid computing. We don't claim
anything but that we are working to solve scientific
problems of general interest.

Hi there, Dr. Bonneau. Many members are quite involved with the progress of this project (please step foward L.H.). We appreciate your willingness to take the time to share additional information as circumstances and schedules permit.

Despite the difficulties this may at times entail for you, we certainly enjoy hearing from you.

Good luck with your work.
