Changing Device Name

Is there some way to do this, after it sets itself automatically upon installation?

I've recently installed on two computers -- a Mac and a Linux Ubuntu. Neither of those installation processes gave me a chance to assign a name to the new device. Instead, they assigned really weird an unhelpful names they picked up from the computer somewhere.

Can someone help me with this? Thanks so much!

Re: Changing Device Name

Per the linked thread the device name is OS assigned computer name driven. This question comes up on occasion so added for starters a step-by-step to the Vista FAQ, point 15. I'm sure there are others loitering the internet for MAC and Linux.

A caveat is that sometimes some maneuvering is needed under Linux as sometimes the ISP does funny stuff to change the identification during transmission. Several posts on these fora discuss this.

... if found / shared they will be collated in a separate Start Here FAQ.

cheers

Re: Changing Device Name

Lesson Learned:
Don't change domain name in Ubuntu.

It corrupts a significant file in a way that denies access to all the administrator functions.

Maybe you could do it to a virgin system, before any changes were made after installation. It looks like I'm stuck with the wierd ID name that BOINC picks up and reports to WCG for my stats. Yipes!
