Linux/Ubuntu Installation

I just set up a new Linux/Ubuntu machine from Dell. [It came with Ubuntu pre-installed.] This was the first program I attempted to install. I struggled, but eventually got to this:

In the BOINC folder installed on my desktop, I have both the BOINC (client) file and the BOINCMGR. I can start the client and it seems to be running all right. But when I start the manager, I get a Connection Error message that tells me to make sure this program is in the same directory as the client. I guess it's not, for some unknown reason. I get the same result if I try to start the manager from the Applications / System Tools drop-down list.

Can someone tell me how to resolve this, please? I really do want to use the manager. But I'm reluctant to stumble through more fix guesses on my own. Thanks so much.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu Installation

Don't try to install BOINC from the standard package. It's too much work, and ends in tears. Delete the folder you have installed.

Use your package manager.

Open Synaptec, and search for boinc. Install the boinc-client and boinc-manager packages.

And that should do everything for you! Please ask if you need further help.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu Installation

After hours of looking around I was finally able to install boinc on the ubuntu server i bought for wcg :). I was just wondering, since on the simple view it uses the boinc default skin, is it possible to change some files so that it uses the wcg skin?

Thanks.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu Installation

If you have the WCG version, simply copy the folder from the skins folder. It's completely portable - just copy the files, and that's it.

Re: Linux/Ubuntu Installation

Do you know where the skin files are installed for my current bionic installation on ubuntu? Ive looked in "var -> bionic-client" and "lib -> bionic-client" but there are no skin folders in there.

Also, is it just possible to have it default start in advanced view?

Re: Linux/Ubuntu Installation

It should remember the last view you used.

According to my records, skins should be installed to ${BOINC_HOME}/skins/Skin_Name/

So probably you will have to create the "skins" directory yourself.
