Bandwidth Usage

Hi,

I was wondering how much bandwidth WCG is actually using on average per month (I have all projects selected except african climate), just so I dont exceed my cap.

At the moment I have 5 cores running at home, and am probably going to add another quad core computer as long as i wont potentially go over my cap.

Thanks :)

Re: Bandwidth Usage

Sorry, there is no telling simply because each member has a different production. Visit the Start Here forum and visit the Project Matrix to get an indication of the up/download sizes per-job/project and extrapolate for your work mix.

ACAH is finished and there were so few jobs anyhow for this project on a per-member basis that it would hardly have caused cap endangering.

Re: Bandwidth Usage

It depends on how fast your machines are, and how many tasks you do per month. Different tasks have different requirements. A (complex) chart that shows the data you need to calculate it is here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17855

In summary, to download and upload a single task for the following projects

HCC - 0.2Mb
FA@H - 0.4Mb
DDD-T - 0.75-0.9Mb
RICE - 0.35-0.95 Mb
HPF2 - 2.1-2.6Mb

HCC or FA@H would be the lowest bandwidth projects, if you're worried about bandwidth, disable HPF2. FA@H is listed somewhere at about 50-60M/month per core for a medium machine.

How many tasks you actually process is dependent on your machine, including other usage - except for RICE which takes 8 CPU hours per task, but the faster the machine the more results it has to send. Take a look at your stats to see how many tasks/day you're doing to get an idea of the bandwidth you'll use.

Okay cool thanks, I was thinking the tasks were considerably larger than that. I have about 4gigs of bandwidth to spare for WCG so I should be well in the clear :)
