Folding@home at 4+ petaflops, wcg only at .2, so when we gonna support GPU's?

So I've noticed no one's brought this up in a while. Folding@home has achieved over 4 petaflops only because of their support for GPU's and the PS3. Us over here at WCG only pulling about 202 teraflops. I'm begging, and I mean down on my knee's groveling, for some scientist, even just one, to write just one project for WCG that supports OpenCL and or CUDA. Folding@home has made it clear that it's worth while.

Folding@Home's claims should be taken with a grain of salt*.

Meanwhile, WCG are doing everything they can to take advantage of GPUs.

* i.e. they are totally bogus - it is not an equal comparison. Apples and oranges spring to mind. Further, the claims are inflated by Sony and ATI's marketing departments. In short, the comparison you are making is not valid.

Would you like to explain how the comparison on the amount of work Folding@home get's done on gpu's in comparison with their own work done on CPU's is bogus? Take a look.

Even if the numbers are half right or a quarter right you have to admit that you can’t ignore the sheer power of what they are using. Imagine the same “Bogus numbers” being on our side!!!!
What change for the acceleration of our projects will that be? Or what advertising will bring those numbers to WCG? People will flock to the biggest grid as it is natural to do that, to make it even more powerful.
So the conclusion is we hope for WCG to have it in the future, but lets not mislead people into thinking is no big deal to have GPU power on our side.

I (and others) have posted more detailed technical explanations before.

You are both right, though, in that we want to take advantage of this capability. Just don't fall into the trap of comparing the raw numbers directly.

And, if you want to beg scientists to do something in this area, do not forget that the best place is not here but on the sites of projects that you think might be interested by this type of programming. Again, WCG does not develop any science application.

Cheers. Jean.

Curious: has the idea been floated by WCG to the current project scientists?

Hi esoteric17,
I have heard that they have discussed GPUs on BOINC 6 with the BOINC developers. I have read an article stating that Nvidia has been helping to move AutoDock to CUDA. I do not know if any project scientists have discussed GPUs. There is nothing scheduled.

Thanks Lawrence. If Autodock was on CUDA that would be awesome.
