Silly deadlines

Found a work unit with a rather ridiculous deadline of 33 hours. Been crunching this for 18 hours, says 21 to go. Is there a point to continuing? I doubt there are many machines out there that could finish this work unit in the allotted time ;)

Re: Silly deadlines

Yes, please finish it. We know about the short deadlines.

Re: Silly deadlines

Shall do. So "Too Late" results are still used/useful and aren't discarded?

Hello Marnitz,

Yes, 'Too Late' just means that another copy has been sent out. The results are used. We are having trouble figuring out how long a CEP unit will take.

Yes.

The trouble is that the copies that are being sent out contain deadlines that are unreasonable. For example, I have a dual-core machine; two CEP units are now running at "High Priority" that have no hope of finishing before their current 32 hour deadlines. Both of these units put already running units into "Ready to Run" status which will, I assume, finish running later.

I'm going to let them run until "Too late" finishes them, but I'm not sure that you're going to get any more information than the original "Too late" WUs have already given you.

Re: Silly deadlines

I think there is some confusion, here.

"Too Late" is the status given to returned work units that arrived after the deadline. They are still validated and may receive credit (and, when the mistake is WCG's, as now, credit is always given if possible).

Work units that miss the deadline are marked as "No Reply" if they haven't been returned.

The original copies will have had normal deadlines. There is always a possibility that results will get returned after the system has given up on them. It's an acceptable waste.

Re: Silly deadlines

Thanks for the clarification. Here are my current WUs

Project Name: The Clean Energy Project
Created: 12/12/08
Name: E000043_422A_00054r000

Project Name: The Clean Energy Project
Created: 12/6/08
Name: E000027_371A_00035s00z

If I let these units run to completion I believe that the currently non-CEP WUs that have been placed in "Waiting to Run" will also be placed in "Too Late" status.

I don't know how acceptable that is.

Re: Silly deadlines

Deadlines are 12-20 days. They aren't usually a limiting factor.

BOINC will automatically try to make all your deadlines as well as possible.

Re: Silly deadlines

Nutritious Rice for the World now has 10 hour work units.

The problem with CEP isn't that the work units are too long, it is that they vary too much in size (so yes, some of them are too long).
