As we all know the results are available to any researcher that may have access to it. What prevents an individual or corporate group or even a government entity or terrorist supporter to use the results to develope a bio weapon? For example, take the results which identify the genetic cause for some cancers, blindness, Tay Sachs, sickle cell, or even Alzeihmers, manipulate the gene sequence some how, bind it with a cold virus, and spread it among the general population. Just remember, you're not paranoid when there really are people out to get you.

There are easier ways to create bioweapons. You can rest easy this Christmas.

Just remember, you're not paranoid when there really are people out to get you. I think that is impossible build any barrier against public knowledge of results to prevent any kind of this. If anyone can acess the data, anyone can disseminate this data away in many forms to many people without control. Any bioterrorist, by standard behavior based on historics, and by negative principle of this humanity waste, they will take a lot of care about it anonimous identity after pick any data to use... Probably will use a lot of dissemination methods to avoid be identifyed in a future in case of any investigation. Believe me, this kind of evils do not have honor and if put a crazy idea in your brain to destroy anyone, will be almost impossible to innocent people build any defense against. I agree with Didactylos about easier ways to produce cheap and massive bioweapons using for example modified flu virus as matrix (there are a lot of example in the especialized literature) or any other varieties of vectors to disseminate pragues, like bacterias or micro organisms to destroy populations. Be safe and rest in peace during greetings seasons.

It's already possible, at least in theory, to reconstruct the small pox virus from its published genome. Its already been done with the polio virus.
----------------------------------------As the technology becomes widely available and more people are trained in its use it will be a very real danger. Even more worrisome are prions - improperly folded infectious proteins that can cause disease by re-folding the normal variants. All knowledge is dangerous. Hopefully our understanding of these things will outpace the opportunities for their abuse.   |

I don't think we have to worry about this research being used for nasty purposes... The only way anything like this could be used requires a mass distribution of infectious agents (IF anyone was able to produce any in the first case) and mass distribution of infectious agents without detection is an unlikely event. In any case, the only defense to the onslaught of any technological warfare is to hole yourself up in a cave like a good little ludite. Grow your own food, go off the grid, and keep out of communicable range of other people.... Other than that, take the risks everyone else takes.. which are relatively minimal to be truthful, and don't worry about such things... even the terrorists who caused the worst calamity in American history only killed .001% of the US population on that fateful day.... It's hard to imagine with the defenses being up now against all kinds of terrorism imagined that anyone would have any more success than that. In other words, go about living, and quit worrying about dying... Just my philosophy, but I think it's a helpful one. Not saying not to be wary, but I wouldn't lose sleep about this one... This knowledge is more likely to be used for helpful purposes, than for evil with any success.

yes i am sure alot of things "could" be used to make terror weapons or such
----------------------------------------If you watch the news you can hear about improvised explosive devices that are pretty much made out of anything. I doubt if anyone would spend the time/energy/reserch nessary to turn this project into a terror weapon. There are just so many cheeper and easyer things for them to use.  |
