When I wake my computer from screen saver mode (I’m using WCG as screen saver) it shuts down the application that was open and active when the computer went into screen saver mode. I only started experiencing this since installing WCG. Anyone else experience this? I’m running XP. Is this a known bug? Couldn’t find it in a search of the forums. Thanks

Most of us do not run the WCG screen saver because it uses CPU cycles which would otherwise be available for the grid project. On my system, I have selected "(None)" for the screen saver and then I use the "Power" button on monitor power to turn my monitor off after 10 minutes. As a test, I did try resetting it to use the WCG screen saver and had a few applications running when it went into screen saver. I am running XP with SP 2 applied to it. When I brought it back, everything was running okay for me. I have not seen anyone indicating this as a problem in the forums that I can recall and I do monitor the forums a lot. What applications are shutting down when this happens? Are you logged in to a "Computer Administrator" session? What anti-virus software or other environmental software such as anti-spyware programs are running on the system? |

Thanks Dave,
I am running XP home edition w/SP2. Only one account set up on the computer I use and it is set as "Computer Administrator". I run Norton Antivirus. No active antispyware running, but I do use Adaware and Spywareblaster from time to time. I havent tried a wide variety of programs, but it has shut down Quicken, Firefox Browsers, and excel on me. I should have mentioned this does not occur on my other computer running Windows 2000. Overall, not a big deal to me, its probably just an odd mix of variables. I had not thought of the lost CPU cycles due to the screen saver runnning. I think I'll go that route and disable the screen saver mode and just turn off my monitor. -Matt |

The only program among your list that I had to test with was Microsoft Excel. I just ran another test with it active and did not experience the problem. I do not have Norton Antivirus (I have Trend Micro Internet Security running). I think you will find running without a screen saver and turning off the monitor will resolve the issue for you and also will benefit the WCG with more CPU cycles available. |

It may be that your system has limited memory and limited swap file size. Try increasing your max swap file (virtual memory paging file) size by several hundred megabytes. Look at Control Panel ->System ->Advanced ->Performance Options. This may fix your problem.

Seems that I am running the same system XP w/ SP2 that you are, including Norton (SystemWorks). I have Spywareblaster & Spyware Eliminator, but not Adaware. There are also lots of specialized apps on my PC. I used to run the screen saver mode and never experienced your problem.
Good luck. ![]() |

I'll toss in my own free advice. About a month ago I tried a registry cleaner utility and was amazed at how many problems it found to fix. No, it did not solve the particular minor problem I was trying to fix. But if you type 'registry clean' in Google, you will find a wide selection of free or trial registry cleaners. Who knows? It might even help.

I have left Firefox and Excel open before while running the screensaver (I use it as advertising, even though it takes up extra CPU cycles) and never had it close them before. I don't have SP2 installed, but I will be getting on April 12th, so I will let you know after that if I start having that problem (or not).
I haven't seen this reported before on the forums... Hopefully it's not something new... |

Well, it's April 13th and I just checked and I don't have the SP2 update yet... Just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about it. |

I am not sure if this helps or not. I do not use the screen saver but am running SP2 and FireFox and Thunderbird and all the normal Microsoft office products, Some Adobe and a lot of Macromedia .....
----------------------------------------I have never had any of these apps shut down. This on about a dozen differnt computers including AMD and Intel. They also include XP Home on a few but mostly XP Pro. It that helps great...if not Forget all after "I am not sure....." Regards All |
