I'd really love to be able to belong to multiple teams. I'd like to belong to a team representing my place of employment, one for a social club I belong to, and one for a professional organization that I'm a member of. As it is right now, I have to pick only one. Any reason why we need to limit people from belonging to only one team at a time?

You can join as many teams as you like - just not simultaneously. As Scribe observes, this is because of credit accounting. Teams aren't just for affiliation purposes.

Exactly, so if you joined 3 teams at the same time...then technically your work unit points would be multiplied 3 times....which would be incorrect and inaccurate.

Any reason why we need to limit people from belonging to only one team at a time? leip, All you need do is join as many teams as you wish and, when you feel like doing so, switch from one team to the other at will. You just can't be with more than one team at any one time and, the points that you earn with a team will stay with that team. Of course, they will also be included in your personal points stats. If you want to join more than one team at the same time you would need to have multiple accounts(multiple sign in names), an individual one for each team you wished to join.
