CPID Problems for 2 users

I run a small stats site for The Knights Who Say Ni! ,and have found a problem with WCG's assignment of CPID's.

CPID= 4fb4ed29a52e96f6c0ffb9e27aec07fe is assigned to both:
Wabbit98 : United States
-and-
killerrwabbit : BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY

CPID = b17ae4039ddec37552512d09ed54e81d is assigned to both:
Jason Duvall, United States
-and-
TimothyLeary, United States

This makes a mess of things for all stats sites, as CPID's are supposed to be unique.
I don't know about Duvall/Leary, but Wabbit98 and Killerrwabbit are two different people.
In both cases, I am getting statistical data both users showing the same CPID.

Wherever the same email address is used for multiple accounts, BOINC will try to consolidate these.

The problem is that Wabbit98 did not sign up as Killerrwabit.
I sent him a link to this thread.

Re: CPID Problems for 2 users

CPIDs are not unique. That's kind of the whole point :-)

Re: CPID Problems for 2 users

The CPID (Cross Project IDentifier) is supposed to be unique for each user. It is Boinc's way of matching user x from project to project.

Re: CPID Problems for 2 users

1 of those 2 rabbits has not returned a result for 17,000+ hours.

In any case the CPID is derived from the email address. It's pretty close to lots of decimals of 100% that the active account and the inactive account use the same email address. To split, the old account could be updated with a junk address, but is that what the owner wants?

Re: CPID Problems for 2 users

The CPID is unique for each user in all projects using the normal BOINC join/attach procedure.
The problem is created by WCG because it allows different users to use the same email address, which shouldn't be allowed (according to BOINC).
WCG chose to use unique user names instead of unique email addresses and now the stats sites have this problem.

Re: CPID Problems for 2 users

WCG existed before BOINC became mainstream and indeed consciously chose to allow multiple accounts to be linked to 1 email address.

Notwithstanding, BOINC has the mechanism to join projects and stats to the OLDEST CPID generated from an email address, even in-house.

Think a number of users like it that way, contributing to different teams e.g. yet have their numbers roll up at BOINCstats etc.
