Communication issues after server migration

Hi to everybody,

i'm experiencing many problems with BOINC after the migration. First of all I updated to the version 6.4.5., and this never worked, but I don't know if problems are related to this update.

Boinc is not anymore able to communicate with servers. If I don't use a proxy (as before, and it was working without problems) the error message is:

2/3/2009 11:29:01 AM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Couldn't resolve host name

If I am using the proxy, this is the message

2/3/2009 11:32:26 AM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

Also, I just discovered that if I try to open any link to the site of WCG from the tab "Projects" is appearing this dialog box with this message:

"WCG Boinc client tried to display the web page:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
but couldn't find a web browser.
To fix this, set the environment variable
BROWSER to the path of your web browser,
then restart the World Community Grid - BOINC Client"

I really don't know what is an environment variable, and how to set it.

Anyone of you have some suggestion to fix all this?

Many thanks in advance, cheers
F.

Re: Communication issues after server migration

Hi,

Three things:

1. You're on Linux given the "BROWSER" var.
2. I think your installation went bad given the old "peer certificate" fault flares up. Either the ca-bundle.crt file is missing from the install or is in the wrong place. Some BOINC / Linux combo's don't need the file at all.
3. Version 6.4.5 is only for those doing GPU/CUDA computing. Are You?

Suggest you revert to the WCG recommended 6.2.15 for Linux.

Sorry

Edit: Linux point, pre-coffee blurp.

Re: Communication issues after server migration

thank you for the answer first of all.

I'm not in Linux, I'm in WinXP.

I updated to 6.4.5 only because BOINC itself was suggesting to do in the messages. Now I understood and while waiting the answer I removed this and I installed 6.2.28.

Nevertheless, problems are still there. I have this messages:

2/3/2009 12:13:01 PM||BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.

2/3/2009 12:24:31 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

2/3/2009 12:27:09 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Couldn't resolve host name

Boinc is not blocked by Windows Firewall; more than this I really don't know what to do.

Thanks in advance for the further help.
Cheers

Re: Communication issues after server migration

Did you boot the computer? My computers have been reporting no upload errors at all.

If you catch the WCG version 6.2.28 you wont be getting more of the premature messages from Berkeley to upgrade. Only when WCG has tested and upgraded will those come.

Best is you do a clean install, i.e. uninstall, delete anything of BOINC program and BOINC data directories and install 6.2.28.

Sorry about the Linux confusion, missed my coffee biggrin

Re: Communication issues after server migration

No worries! ;-)

I've done reboot now, still nothing! Now I see BOINC is two times into the tray area! ;-0

Now I will remove everything, as suggested, and then reinstall, tomorrow I will reboot and then I will let you know.

In the meantime if you have other suggestions, these are most welcomed.
cheers

Re: Communication issues after server migration

Hi, latakia.

Sounds like your computer is in a bit of a mess. BOINC can't find your web browser, or your Internet connection. Are your Windows updates all installed, and your antivirus software current?

I think the duplicate tray icon is caused by a bug in the BOINC 6.4.5 installer. Fixing it will require using regedit. Can you do that?

Maybe it is two copies of Boincmgr not Boinc

Re: Communication issues after server migration

Hi Didactylos,

yes, my windows and my antivirus are updated.

I can manage regedit, but you should explain to me the steps I should follow.

I had a look and there is no a double boincmgr.

Many thanks in advance.
cheers

Re: Communication issues after server migration

Open regedit, and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete any entries relating to BOINC.

Repeat for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
