We spend SIX MONTHS of our lives just talking about the weather
By NICK MCDERMOTT Last updated at 9:51 AM on 14th May 2010 Comments (8) Add to My Stories It's a handy topic to break the ice or simply pass the time. Now the extent of our national obsession with the weather has been made clear. We actually spend six months of our lives discussing it, a survey has shown. Our fixation with the elements means Britons talk about the climate almost five times a day, spending longer dissecting its ups and downs than on sport or work. Evening all
The weather variations also act as useful mental diary entries for the things we like to remember in the past. School holidays when I earned some money helping with the harvest and the lucky hot ones when all went smoothly and the wet ones where the sheaves had to be moved and attempts to dry them before they could go to the rick; No combine harvesters then. The cold winter of 62/63 when daughter No 2 was born and even the very modern house I had lacked central heating and I walked on the Thames and the local pub put tables and chairs on the ice to serve drinks on the river. A holiday on the Thames with the kids when the sun didn't stop shining and the only problem was the possibility of beaching the boat. And to follow that the next year with a week on the coast in a Friends caravan when it didn't stop raining. The warmth of holidays in Provence, digging the car out of the snow in Hamburg and then walking on the Alster. It's all like a mental diary so how lost we would be if it was temperate and predictable all the time. And, having said all that, will it please get a tad warmer NOW. |
