Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

When I unlock my Vista (with crtl-alt-del), my system hangs for about 1 or 2 minutes. When I close the BOINC client, this problem never occurs. When I start it again, my PC freezes after every unlock.

Any idea's?

Thx

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

Vista Quad? What BOINC version? Installed as service or all user?

My thinking is that your BOINC is on power saving and unloads sciences. On a quad the reawakening could lead to delay, but 2 minutes freeze is long.

Anyway, open up BOINC Manager advanced view and copy / paste a good chunk of message log from around the lost time this happened.

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

hmmm, is it enough to do a lock / unlock sequence to get the effect, or after a certain time? Powersave wont kick in by default until 20 minutes after a device is not getting keyboard/mouse input.

What other apps are running, possibly full screen, such as MS office?

Possibly some Vista service kicks in. Make a TaskManager snapshot when Process tab is up. Lock, Unlock and compare the snapshot with the Taskmanager, process view and see what ate the CPU time in between.

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

Eric Broers, BOINC cannot cause your computer to freeze directly. If your computer is genuinely freezing up, then there is some other underlying cause.

However, there are circumstances where BOINC can make an existing problem much more severe.

You should scan your computer for spyware, and remove any unnecessary software such as toolbars and add-ins.

Finally, check your Event Log. There is a strong chance that Vista is logging something.

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

I do not agree with your statement that BOINC cannot cause my computer to freeze. When I unload the BOINC client, the problem doesn't occur anymore. When I restart the clients, it's back. Only my mouse is working, the rest freezes. I already have checked my computer for virusses and spyware: nothing found. And my event log shows no problems...

@petehardy,

What do you mean by "Version 6.2.28 has a 2 min delay before any Work Units start/resume"?

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

What petehardy was talking about is only in effect when the BOINC core client is initially started as service or user application. That time is configurable but has nothing at all to do with your user sign in delay after screen lock.

Back to the other Q&A, do not seem to see an answer to:
hmmm, is it enough to do a lock / unlock sequence to get the effect, or after a certain time?

The OS will endeavour to do indexing and other housekeeping things during sign up. Anything going like that?

With power save preset profile, BOINC would by default unload the science after 20 minutes of inaction. If signing in after 20 minutes, you have quite a bit going on. See if "leave application in memory" in the local prefs changes the behaviour. All of this has never caused issues for me on the Vista quad even when still 'just' with 2gb RAM.

Added: Such pausing of BOINC would be shown in the message log.

Re: Vista freezes for a few minutes after unlocking

Hi Eric.

You are the only person with this problem, which is a clear indication the problem is with your computer, not BOINC.

I already explained why you may only experience this problem when BOINC is running.

I'm not clear on what you are actually doing to cause this. You say you are using ctrl-alt-delete to "unlock" your computer. How are you locking it? What power saving modes are you using?

When the computer is frozen, is it responsive to ctrl-alt-delete? The power button?

Finally, I suggest you uninstall BOINC and reinstall using these instructions: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation

Good luck.
