Re: Not a Network problem

You could check the Intel site for Max Recommended temperature for your particular P4 chip. Obviously you are running close to the limit. My temperatures fluctuate 48-50 degrees C. There is a thread titled 'Useful Utilities' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 that mentions ThreadMaster, which can limit CPU usage to a maximum percentage. Just an idea.

Re: Network problem

Viktor said " You could give them different profiles and make them communicate and run at different times. But, I am still not sure how this could be happening in your setup without being there in person to poke around for clues. "

... Did that two days ago before when we still thought it was a network problem. Turns out to have been a loose memory bank - microsoft's memory check ran all night and the two memory banks I have are now stable (just reseated them)... All Agents are running (Two PCs and a laptop) with no "interbugering around" ....

It must have been coincidence, that when I moved the two PCs next to eachother I observed the crash of #2 Agent when #1 Agent was comunicating. This made me mislead all of you (and myself).

Everything stable now. Thanks.

Now I am just trying to get the CPU temperature in the Toshiba laptop down. It is running now running at 56 degrees - 100% power. It turns out that SpeedFan had not calibrated the scale correctly. I therefore switched everything off, let if cool down to room temperature and the calibrated SpeedFan when everything was cold - giving +5 degrees for the processor warming up while loading windows - it is quite amaizing how volitile the temperature of the Toshiba laptop is. Does anyone else use SpeedFan on a Toshiba Laptop? I will be interested to know if they can seen fan speeds - I canot.

Re: Network problem

I'm glad you discovered the problem (memory loose). Coincidences often fool all of us and make us down strange paths ;-)

I am not familiar with Toshiba laptop fan speed tools.

Re: Network problem

My Toshiba Satelllite is new and has a menu item called "Toshiba Console" In the "Console" window, there is a "Power Managment" window. In there you can control all kinds of things including CPU "Speed". Your choices are 1,2,3 or 4. I generally leave it on 2 (which takes the 3.2Ghz P4 down quite a bit...I have not tested) and cools it down to the point that the fan just idles. In a cold room (65-70 F) I can run it at "3" with the fan running slow. That is all about I know about it as I have never messed with it much. I just use it when I am on the road.

Re: Network problem

Thanks Robert. I have seen that that option and have also "played with it". I also use my Toshiba for presentations and meetings only, however was inspired by wcg to try and use it a bit more while its is not on the road.

The Toshiba Console allows you to set the procesor mode for dfferent power conditions. I guess it actually drops the clock speed. I have set it for level 3 (4 levels in total) which also allows the fan to trickle away silently and does not really disturb you. I have also set the hard disc to switch off (please keep in mind that this is not default mode when you are connected to AC power supply - however the only mode in which the Agent will run) as well as the monitor....all down to minimum - hopefully in this way no processor cycles are being taken away by the system having to monitor and control these tasks.

If anyone has any experience with setting the parameters in speedfan so that speedfan sees the fan, I will appreciate some help. At present I cannot see the fan at all on speedfan console. If noone knows how to do this, then I will get in touch with Alfredo of speedfan .... he should know - he designed Speedfan!

Re: Network problem

I am loosing data (points) from one of my PCs.

I run two PCs 24/7. One is dedicated to the wcg project and the other one is used by me during the day. The unit dedicated to the wcg has over the last two weeks dropped its average point generation from around 500 - 600 to aaround 250. The PC is on all the time, is not reeboting (i.e. loosing data) and has no new additional work load. Its ranking in the AGENT is still the same as it was a month go. At the end of a work unit, it sends it back data to the grid and the total number of points change. However when I look at the device statistics, I do not see the all these points (not even the following day after update). As a result, my average daily points have dropped and the worst things is that the data is being crunched, processed delivered and oopps..... GONE!

May I ask an Admin to look at: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...istory.do?deviceId=123509

and try to identify where the data is going ... or not going if that is the case.

PS I decided to post this new problem as a new thread just in case they are related.

New Problem

Hello RobSab,
The first thing is to gather all the facts. Just what sort of system is this? Is it really gaining points on the Client when it sends back results that do not show up on your device statistics on the website? If so, you need to send a 'Contact Us' report with a specific time the result was returned for knreed to look at.

I am bothered by 'not rebooting'. You DO occasionally reboot this 24/7 system, don't you? After all, Windows is notorious for strange memory leaks, etc., caused by all those different device drivers and programs from different manufacturers.

I am sure you know exactly what the symptoms are, but I am still a bit uncertain just what is happening. Could you record some result times and points this weekend?

Re: Network problem

RobSab, please email support (attn Viktors) and give your device id number as shown on your preferences window of your agent. Then I'll be able to look up your device and see if there is anything unusual at this end. Thanks.

Re: the task reaches 100% and then without sending the data anywhere starts the next task.

Just discovered a new trick in this game - I was writing a new post (1/2 hr long) and I came to a point where I needed to fere to my device profiles. So I went to the Agent and clicked on "view your device list" on the main screen. The device screen opened in the same window as the post as I was writing.......... and I lost my post!

hmmm.. conclusion - shouldn't write such long and detailed posts! I will rewrite once I cool down a bit.....

.....Hello Huston. Huston.....we have a problem!

Thankyou joatman - very useful.... I am very grateful as I didn't think anyone had even noticed the post - or maybe everyone but you has been experiencing this behaviour of their browser and assumed that "that is the way it works!"

Thanks.
