We've seen a few reports to include minutes needing for a computer to become responsive again after log in. Anyway, just read today an update on a news item mentioned in the chat room. The causes name could be Conficker.
----------------------------------------There has been an internationally concerted effort started as this worm does known and unknown things to include pulling malware. Better do a thorough check if you have unexplainable and sudden slowing and certainly make sure to have the defense software running. It's already infested millions of computers... possibly even the computer of a trusted friend who send you an email. Some links to tools to remove the bugger are offered here: http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/134694 This page links to the most popular providers like Symantec F-Secure and BitFinder. One of the signs you have it is, that it prevents your browser to connect to the website of your AV provider. Late last year I checked and just used an alternate from F-Secure cleaning tool and nothing was found. Normally WCG/BOINC should not eat higher level CPU time. The sciences run at the lowest possible level and really only use spare cycles subordinate to anything else on the system. Only the BOINC.exe core client and BOINC Manager run at normal priority and still should only use a fraction of the user available time. One exception. When your system is strapped for memory, disk swapping could be noticed for the larger projects. That runs at a higher priority. cheers

I run windows xp pro with sp3, I run my internet through a hardware firewall, (smoothwall-free) and on my computer I do have the built in firewall enabled, I run pctools anti-virus, and pctools threatfire, (both free) and I also have ad-aware-free running also, with all of that it stops anything that tries to install or download without my permission
if you want to get a hold of any of the software I use, just Google for them |

Another good thing to do is open dns.
You make an account (free) and run a small client on your computer (mac and windows). The client will change your dns to use the open dns servers and you can set a profile on what you can have access to. Using this service with help you in not getting the conflicker worm. http://blog.opendns.com/2009/02/09/stats-are-back-and-conficker/ You can also use there dns in your home router to protect all your computers with out running there little application. We have found it very useful on our remote sales users laptops. We have a ton less virus/spyware calls from them now. |

Open DNS :D
----------------------------------------Been using their service since Feb.6 on IP 208.67.222.222 and secondary 208.67.220.220. Coincidental to see their announcement of feb 9. Thanks brink Wdit: Note to hunterkasy below, definitely for me it showed improvement over the regular ISP's DNS service.

I have tried open dns, but I never seen any increase in speed like the site was preaching about, but on the other hand, all the stuff you can configure through your account profile is unbelievable you can configure it to block malware all the way down to adult sites, pretty much anything you would want to protect yourself and your family from
