Welcome to the Influenza Antiviral Drug Search project

We are pleased to inform you that we have started the "Influenza Antiviral Drug Search" project on World Community Grid. Your computers will provide the global computing power necessary to identify promising drug candidates to disable neuraminidase (N1, N2, etc), NS1 protein, hemagglutinin, and possibly other influenza targets in the future, which would potentially include various drug resistant neuraminidase mutants. While this will not lead to a quick cure for the disease, it certainly should help the fight against influenza. We hope that many new people will join World Community Grid and participate in this project to combat influenza. Thank you for helping out and joining this project.

Re: Welcome to the Influenza Antiviral Drug Search project

I did a little research on influenza statistics yesterday.

Lower respiratory infections are the primary cause of death in low income countries. Worldwide, they are the third biggest cause of death, responsible for 7.1% of all deaths everywhere. That's influenza, pneumonia and bronchitis (the latter two are common complications of influenza).

Lower respiratory infections caused 4.2 million deaths in 2004.

Seasonal flu is responsible for 250 000 to 500 000 deaths every year.

Re: Welcome to the Influenza Antiviral Drug Search project

uplinger,
I have started one IADS under Ubuntu and tried the graphcs. Bad news, the title and the WCG text and logo are extremely small, barely readable, as well as the UTMB logo.
The IBM and BOINC logos are completely absent from the bottom of that screen.
Everything else is OK (pictures, progress, etc...).
Things are alright under XP.

Cheers. Jean.

Welcome to WCG for your second project!

It's always nice to have a new project sneak up on you. Hopefully you will keep us informed with updates. I'm switching over some of my computers now.

Jean, I will take a look at it on my ubuntu box when i reboot. I am running 9.04 on it so I hope I can recreate what you are seeing. What version of ubuntu are you running?
