Hello,
Unfortunately in my case (doing the Energy Projekt) the scheduler asks for max. one piece of work (in other words "result") in addition to the piece of work (result) being in progress So, as a result, there are max. two pieces of work (results) in my harddisk: The one being in progress at the moment and one additonal one being ready for execution (in German: zur Ausfuehrung bereit). Unfortunately, I could not find an option that makes the scheduler ask for more work. My question is: Does the BOINC Manager have such an option? If not, I would urge to programe such an option. The reason why I would need such an option is as follows: I leave my computer on going for one week on holiday. For technical reasons, my internet connection breaks down quite often and does not establish itself automatically. I have to switch off and turn on the cable modem manually to reestablish the internet connection. If the connection breakes down, the computer will not be able to ask for new work and will run out of jobs. I note, that the technical reasons cannot be chanced by my internet provider, because the type of cable modem they offer simply has this technical problem and this problem cannot be solved. I will stay like this. So, I should be able to ask the scheduler by taking an option: Now, please take four pieces of work, not only one because I am going on holidays. Tank you in advance for your answers. Martin Schnellinger (Kafejka) |

Hi Martin,
----------------------------------------Yes, what you're asking for is already available ![]() Firstly, go to "My Grid", then, "Device Manager", and then "Device Profiles". After that, Click on the "Default" Profile Name (that is, presuming that you haven't already created a new profile). From there, there are 5 profile types - choose "Custom Profile", and that will then open up a whole list of options for you to modify ![]() The one you're interested, is "Workunit Cache Settings" - which can then be increased. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a setting higher than 5 or 6 (so as to build in a bit of contingency), as the WU's WCG send out, have a return date of 10 days. After you're happy with that, press "Save". Then, in a short while, you'll have a few more WU's waiting to crunch ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at May 6, 2009 4:57:24 AM] |

To increase how much work you wants to have on client, you could either:
----------------------------------------1; Use the web-page to set cache-size, look at Device Manager and click on the Venue you wants to edit. 2; Use the BOINC Manager to edit preferences, click "Advanced view" (if simple view), and in the menu select "Advanced, Preferences...". If you sets preferences in BOINC Manager, they'll override all web-preferences. In either case, there's 2 different parameters that control cache-size: a; "Connect to network about every N days". b; "Cache N extra days of work". The total cache-size is the sum of these 2. It's generally better to use a small "Connect to network about every N days", and instead use a large "extra days". ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

For inconsistency sake, the Local Preference is called Additional Buffer.
----------------------------------------I'd recommend to use the Activity menu and Suspend Networking when away for longer and cache filled. The client in occasions starts eating results and wastes time on networking when it's not there. Long story, but 6.6 alpha client still does so too!
