Any idea when testing on a GPU-enabled version of BOINC might start here on WCG?
I have a quad core/4GB with a 9800GTX/1GB, and I'd like to put that 5th core to work using a 'WCG approved' version of BOINC. I don't really mind helping to test it. Any testing being done by the engineers in the 'back room' should count as beta testing, as the alpha testing seems to have already been done, outside of WCG. So, maybe there should be a Gamma (is that Γ ?) badge added, too, for GPU app testing. ![]() |

The bump thread is in the chat room ;>). Everywhere else, there are hundreds of threads discussing this and today one of the project scientists replied with his view of why it is not:

Just because such a version of BOINC is ever released does not mean every task will have to create work units (optimized) to run on the GPU core(s). I bumped because it had not received a reply in 3+ weeks, other than a I'd like to see that, too message. |

The point of Sekerob's reply is that this question has been asked and answered many, many, many times. You can easily search the fora to see the many threads regarding CUDA. There should be a point in time when nobody has to answer this question again. It has already been answered. |

the answer is here
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=26276 or by bbover3 World Community Grid Admin We're still working on it although it's not super high-priority for us. We were close to having a plan in place for going only with nVidia but now we are also looking at OpenCL. The only project that is feasible to run CUDA/GPU is Help Conquer Cancer. ![]() |

Following on the quote that CUDA is 'not super high-priority for us' I believe the following tasks will probably be completed before any CUDA implementation:
1. A minimum of 3 new projects that have already been hinted at. 2. UD points conversion. 3. Forum software update If this is true, then anyone interested can also think that CUDA support will appear AFTER all of the above are implemented, which should mean that CUDA is still a year away AT THE EARLIEST. The one point that I have read many times, which makes me laugh, is that the Technical people are consistently telling us that implementation IS VERY DIFFICULT and many crunchers are whining about why someone has not just flicked the switch to make it happen. It's not a super high-priority for us It's bad enough that I am wearing out my computers, so I also don't need to burn out my video cards even faster. |

That's nice, but the thread that broken link is supposed to point to was started 3 weeks after I posted the question in this one. Apparently it's who you blow around here, so I have as much chance of getting an honest answer to valid questions as I would by hopping in the delorean with doc. |
