Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 38 smilesmile

Do a reboot and defrag on each before you leave. As long as you don't take a power hit, you should be fine. That's the nice thing about laptops - the battery keeps you going for any short blips. At some point, I guess I should look into a UPS for the desktop. For me, I usually lose the wireless when the power blinks.

I've left my machines running when I've been away for 5-7 days more than once. Normally, BOINC is all that's running on them in that situation so there's not much that can mess up. The reboot and defrag each week has been the best thing I've found to avoid weirdness and such with Windonts. I do check the weather outlook for while I'm going to be gone. So far, I've not faced the prospect of severe weather and having to decide whether to gamble or not. I also have GoToMyPC so it's easy to check up on my machines when I'm gone too. Of course, that's not much good when the wireless router burps and they lose connectivity - but they keep crunching anyway.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 38 smilesmile

Hope everyone is doing well today..

On Saturday I'm heading to Dallas, Texas for a board review course. Will be there one whole week. crying

Just hoping my computers keep crunching and don't try and shut down or anything silly..

Dr. Mike.. confused

Uh, if you're doing a week long review course, the implication is that the board exam would follow soon after that, right? So the big question is how long after that before you get the results? biggrin

October 12th, If I remember correctly, is the date I take the actual exam.

At some point either before or right after I was born, the wonderful world of Scantron (fill in the oval spaces) came to be. Apparently they have failed to embrace the world of computer based exams, so we still take the paper version.

It takes approximately two months, plus or more plus.. (no minus) So it's worry and wait.. sigh..

Dr. Mike..

Hmm, so you have to remember the review material for about six weeks and then hope for a nice Christmas present in the mail.

arrggghhhh.. lost my internet connection again.. will be low on points for a bit until I can get it fixed.. crying

won't be able to work on it until I get home late tonight..

Dr. Mike..

Are you losing your network connectivity (DSL for example) or are you losing your wireless connection? Hmm, if all of your machines are going through the wireless router, it may seem like losing network.

Routers do die.
I've had Linksys routers work for a few hours, and although all the lights are blinking they aren't passing any information. I've gone through three of them...
My latest DLink worked great for several years, and it was a little more graceful when it died - it just quit working. Unlike the linksys routers, power cycling it didn't bring it back for a little while.
I've got a dlink gaming router right now, and it's been working flawlessly for over two years. When it dies, I have a brand new in-the-box router to replace it.
Home routers aren't near as robust as commercial routers, and they do fail.

Very Interesting. I have had a similar experience with a Linksys router at one of my pro bono sites but I have had two routers (one wired and one wireless) made by NetGear that have been working pretty much continuously for in excess of 5 years without so much as a dropped bit. Small sample (the two of us) but that would seem to indicate that Linksys is not as reliable. thinking

And my Linksys has been running for 5 or 6 years with no problems!
