Advisory Board Update

Dear Members,

When World Community Grid was launched and had no track record, we convened an Advisory Board to help us reach out to various constituencies and establish a rigorous process to vet research proposals to accelerate progress on humanitarian issues. We also wanted to assure that the valuable computational resources we offer are distributed fairly and objectively among potential research projects.

Over the last 5 years, World Community Grid has become established as a serious, first class research enterprise. We now have an effective process to review proposals. We are very pleased that many of the research projects we have supported have been able to leverage the work completed on World Community Grid to garner other funding and take the research to the next phase. We continue to expand our network to encourage new proposal submissions -- and we urge all of our members to help in this regard. All proposals go through a three stage review process, including a technical review, an internal content review by a scientist with relevant experience, and the essential external vetting by independent subject matter experts from the global scientific community. Luckily, World Community Grid has grown with the support of our members to the extent that we have been able to support all research projects that have met our criteria. Exciting new research projects have led to new members and devices with sufficient run time to avoid the need to make difficult decisions on allocating resources.

The members of the Advisory Board provided important support and counsel in our developmental years. They all continue to support and champion World Community Grid through their individual networks and are available to review proposals in their respective fields of expertise. However, given the many calls on their time and the limits to our resources, we have agreed that the Advisory Board will no longer serve and meet as a formal entity.

We want to recognize the generous contributions made by each member of the Advisory Board to World Community Grid and we thank them for their excellent service.

As always, World Community Grid will continue to accept project proposals from non-profit organizations, NGOs, colleges and universities throughout the world. And we will continue to have subject matter experts from the worldwide scientific community review each project against our criteria before it is accepted for support on World Community Grid.

Thank you for continuing to provide the unused cycles of your computer to research that will help alleviate human suffering.
