Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 40 smilesmile

Wow.. talk about some excellent milestones!

I've been on ibuypower looking at desktops.. how do you compute what is a sufficient power supply?

Do all motherboards automatically support video? wireless? How can you tell?

Dr. Mike..

Experience. (well, other than that, have to do your research).
No high end motherboard has onboard video and almost no motherboard has onboard wireless.

For efficiency on a power supply, you have to look at stress tests on them.

If it doesn't have video onboard, how do you get video then?

Dr. Mike..

Dr. Mike,

As DM said, you get video from an add-in card.

It occurs to me that I don't think anyone really answered what you're asking. There are several good places for information on the web in addition the the manufacturer's web sites. Some of the places you might consider looking at:

XtremeSystems
Anandtech
Tom's Hardware

and there are many others.

Here are some very, very rough numbers for power consumption:
Core i7 processor, minor overclock: 140W
Cooler for Core i7: 5W
Motherboard: 50W (maybe less if features are disabled)
Memory: 5W per 2 GB (eg 15W for 6GB)
Hard drive: 10W when active, up to 15W when first spinning up, <5W when not active
Wireless card: 5W (since you mentioned wireless)
CD/DVD drive/writer: 10W (more for some models)
Video Card (crunching): 100W - 150W, maybe more for top-end cards
Case fans: 5W each

Bear in mind that most power supplies have their best efficiency at 20 to 80% of rated power. You do not want a power supply that is just exactly large enough -- it will lead to problems.

For a system like this, the non-power supply components would take about 350W-400W depending on the video card, so a 500W power supply would be the bare minimum. A 550W would be better. If you are going to expand (more hard drives, second video card, etc.), go bigger. Remember that the power supply draws power based on demand and its internal efficiency and will usually draw much less than its rated power during steady state crunching. As for brand of power supply, it's like Blizzie said - check the tests and reviews. I've had good luck with Corsair.

Does that help clear things up?

Our forecast shows we won't get above 22°F for the next week! It is 8°F at the moment sad

I woke up this a.m. and it was a mere 16 degrees F. It warmed up to a balmy, sweltering 24 when I cam einto work earlier this evening.. :)
