Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 41 smilesmile

Ooooooooooookay. Here I was thinking we'd see a better than average day today after the outage. From what I can see, it doesn't look like we have one or two folks drop out for the day. Best I can figure is that a lot less folks than I would have guessed run with a work queue. With the outage, we had a lot of folks with nothing to crunch until things came back up. Oh well. On to tomorrow.....
My "fast" system ran out of work and sat for nearly 4 hours. sad ("fast" being very much relative here)
The good news is that I still got just enough to get a emerald rice badge. smile
More good news ... my "fast" system is supposed to be replaced tomorrow with a faster system. smile
More bad news ... it is my "fast" system being replaced, not my slow or slower system. sad

What's your new firepower?
New firepower, such as it is, happens to be a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo in a laptop. We'll see if it can take the heat at 100%. It replaces a 2.0 GHz Pentium M.

- D

It will make a difference. I think you'll see around 4-5K points a day out of the C2D (sounds like a Lenovo T61 to me, probably widescreen).
Lenovo W500... sort of what the T61 widescreen has evolved into. I estimate that I should be able to get around 7K a day between my 3 systems, at least in winter. We'll see. That machine has most of its WUs in PV right now, so no bump in points yet.

- D

Well, the bump seems to have started hitting now. biggrin Nice numbers Darth! I had forgotten how Lenovo was working on getting the IBM logo off its machines. The whole Thinkpad name is well on its way to the scrap heap if not already. One thing you probably already know, get your hands on a set of small phillips-head screwdrivers. You'll want to learn which screws to remove so that you can remove the wrist-rest cover (that's also needed to add/replace memory unless they've gone back to the expansion slot on the back) and keyboard at least once or twice a year to give it a good dusting. Hopefully, they've improved on their fan's quality. That seems to be a trouble spot for them. I called one time about the fan noise and lucked out. The person on the other end just sent me a replacement fan. It took me an hour or two to replace it but I took it real slow and made a point to lay out the parts and screws as I removed them in a matching location pattern so I could tell what went where just by looking at it. I accidentally managed to grab the fan at one point where I got the thermal paste on my hand. Not realizing what it was at the time, I wiped it off my hand AND the fan! shock Later when it registered with my brain what it was, I started checking the exhaust air. Interestingly, the bottom of the laptop was no longer of the burn-your-thighs category but I couldn't notice any perceptible change in the exhaust air temp. This was the thermal paste between the metal fan frame and the back plastic cover. As I recall, there was a second spot of thermal paste on the fan elsewhere. I've learned with laptops in particular, keep them dusted regularly.

Keith - maybe your stats cooker could keep track of the best individual day for one person? I remember asking a while back if any of the MOTly crew had ever broken 100K points in a day.

- D

Nice idea. Unfortunately, I'd have to adapt it to read, and more importantly, write to a file in order to "remember" the current best days values. Right now, it just reads today's stats data file, yesterday's and the benchmark day's (usually 30 days ago) and all output is to the screen where I just copy and paste it into posts here. Also, for anyone that wants to know what their best points day has been, just go to your My Grid page and click on one of the four time values under "Member Statistics History" (I'd go with 365 days). The value you click on is actually the amount of data you get before you have to click on next page. It's a visual check yes, but you can go all the way back to your first day on WCG. Still, like I said, it's a nice idea. Who knows.....

@ MOT members with a lot of unused memory:
Today me mates at B@A turned me on to a project I have not crunched before ... FreeHAL (artificial intelligence). It uses RAM only (for the most part). Right now on each of my i7 920’s w/24 gig memory I am running 8 Yoyo wu’s on the CPU’s, 10 FreeHAL wu’s in RAM and two Milkyway wu’s on the two cards. Awesome! So far I see no degradation in performance, no increase in core or card temps and only a 2C increase in PCB temp. I think I can run 25 FreeHAL wu’s on each machine but I am increasing it slowly until I get use to the performance of this project. I just thought I would mention it if anyone is interested as it is another way to crunch more with unused resources. The credits are about the same as WCG projects.

Thx for the tip, buddy. Up and running 25 processes right now. Seems stable...

I hope nobody is burried under that snow hitting DC. Looking pretty bad. Is it time to bring up all the global warming measures in congress? lol

It's awsome Chris!!I did 12K credits in 3/4 of a day without affecting CPU or GPU. I'm now running 35 wu's (8/25/2) on each I7. Happy, happy, happy. biggrin

BTW: RNA World just opened up to new members this morning. Three RNA science projects. They are hosted by Rechenkraft ... the same people as Yoyo. http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/

Is it raining down there? We are drowning up here. crying

Good morning MOT. coffee
